PROVIDENCE LIBRARY OF THINGS

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, 02903 United States

Mission Statement

PVD Things is a volunteer-run nonprofit cooperative working to bring a library of things to Providence. The library, “PVD Things,” will allow community members to borrow tools and home maintenance equipment, as well as other occasional-use items. We envision PVD Things as a place where residents of Providence can share resources, skills, and ideas to create change in their lives and neighborhoods.

About This Cause

PVD Things is a volunteer-run nonprofit cooperative working to bring a library of things to Providence. The library, “PVD Things,” will allow community members to borrow tools and home maintenance equipment, as well as other occasional-use items. The library will be structured as a cooperative; members will have the ability to guide the direction of the project through open meetings and voting, as well as get involved at all levels as volunteers. The initial PVD Things steering committee was formed in late 2020. Over the past nine months, we have engaged community members and community organizations in an ongoing conversation about what PVD Things should look like. We have received feedback from nearly 200 Providence residents, engaged around 20 volunteers, and met with a dozen community organizations and other tool libraries. From these conversations we have determined that PVD Things will be most impactful in empowering Providence residents who are living in substandard housing. For this reason, we are focusing on tools that will be a resource to residents seeking to improve the condition of their housing or neighborhoods. In October 2022, PVD Things started to lend out ‘things’ through a partnership with Providence Public Library. Through this partnership, Rhode Island residents can check out a collection of around thirty ‘things’ with their library cards. At the same time, we have been working toward securing a dedicated space for the project where we can house a larger collection of items and serve as a hub for community learning and connections. We have identified a space in the Smith Hill neighborhood of Providence and plan to open PVD Things in early 2022 with a comprehensive selection of tools and other items that will allow members to complete a wide variety of projects, including home repairs.
