Mission Statement
Take Creative Control (TCC) fosters economic inclusion by equipping creators of color with essential resources, legal support, business development and advocacy to navigate and succeed in the creator economy. TCC's mission is to break down systemic barriers that disproportionately affect these creators, ensuring they have fair opportunities to protect, share, and scale their work. By focusing on education, community building, and policy advocacy, TCC aims to promote economic empowerment and ensure that creators of color can fully participate in and benefit from the economic potential of their businesses.
About This Cause
Creators of color innovate and influence despite obstacles to thriving from their work. These obstacles ebb and flow; evolving over time and including tactics from the historical race-based denial of patents to modern disparities in broadband access. Intentional exclusion and institutional racism have prevented creators of color from building wealth, receiving due credit, and at times, have silenced their creative expression. The ongoing impediments between creators of color, their works, and their consumers is an unresolved problem at the intersection of race and the economy spanning generations. Our approach is driven by our commitment to serving creators striving to access their rights from the margins - creators that have been excluded due to race, gender, socio-economic status, geography, sexual identity, etc. We apply a holistic approach to solve a multifaceted, complex problem. 1) Direct creator outreach and education. Countless creators of color have endured the misappropriation of their works without recourse. Creators have been left out of conversations about legal protections resulting in a knowledge gap about their rights and duties as business owners and originators. TCC provides education through events and panels on topics including intellectual property, platform integrity, and business development. We also provide free legal counseling to creators, both one-on-one and in industry-based cohorts, in partnership with law firms, NGOs, and academic institutions. We work with creators and connect them with attorneys, policy and tech experts. Creators receive pro bono legal and business development services. We facilitate working groups that share best practices in navigating the development of their business and craft. 2) Creative partnerships and storytelling. We draw inspiration and adapt lessons from successful justice movements of the past, where activist and creative worlds merged to shift power dynamics and effect change. Influenced by the countercultures built by Martin Luther King and Harry Belafonte or Malcolm X and Maya Angelou, TCC builds networks of creators and experts with the goal of readying creators for self and collective advocacy. Our creative partnerships connect creators to policy solutions - we leverage their craft and platform to lift up the issues impacting their community. From musicians to muralists, our community of creators curate experiences that shine a light on the lived experiences and challenges of marginalized communities that inspire the next generation of activists. 3) Creator-driven policy agenda. Our advocacy work is creator informed and creator driven. Our policy and legal experts help our creators identify and define the injustice they’ve endured. Creators know something is wrong but often struggle with identifying the underlying causes of those injustices and relating them to policy solutions. We empower our creators with the knowledge and infrastructure to advocate for policy solutions that support their ability to share, protect and monetize their work.
