Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide underserved students around Chicago access to quality learning resources imperative towards unlocking their fullest academic potential. We aim to reduce educational inequities by combating systemic influences which impede student access to essential supplies. By refurbishing used materials into quality kits for distribution, we strive to apply environmentally sustainable practices to rewrite the narrative surrounding worn supplies. Our goal is to empower students to explore their creative outlets and tap into the powerful instrument of education.
About This Cause
As summer 2020 was coming to a close and the Covid-19 pandemic was slowly worsening, Walter Payton sophomores, Maya Jha and Sareena Shah realized how the pandemic heightened educational inequities present across Chicagoland. Concurrently, Payton sophomores, Ana Parikh and Raina Koshal had growing concerns over the adverse effects that came with the onset of online learning and were ready to implement change. Thus, The Re-Write It Project was born and driven by the goal of combating educational disparities, they began equipping under-resourced youth with essential school supplies. Since the organization’s founding in August of 2020, it has worked with many different communities to get various supplies into the hands of children who would best benefit. In 2022, the organization gained certification as a 501(c)(3). The organization functions by collecting used supplies, sorting and refurbishing them, and then distributing them to underserved communities and institutions. Supplies are received from donation collection locations, which are spread throughout Chicagoland. These are then refurbished and packed into quality kits, which can contain everything from art materials to binders and notebooks. Since its founding, the organization has donated over 120,000 supplies including more than 3,000 supply kits as well as bulk materials. It has also established 10 donation drop-off centers around the city, increasing accessibility for donors. These centers are facilitated through partnerships with Chicago Public Libraries as well as local art stores. It has also had the pleasure of working with various other incredible organizations and communities. In January of 2021, it partnered with Erie Family Health Center, a healthcare center that provides quality care to primarily underserved Latinx families, and donated supply kits to their WIC (Women, Infants, Children). The organization also had a distribution with the Rohingya Cultural Center in March 2021, a cultural center based out of Devon street that serves the needs of the Rohingya refugee population. Moreover, in July 2021 The Re-Write It Project partnered with both the Jesse White Foundation and Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine to promote educational equity and literacy in underserved areas across the South and West sides of Chicago. In September 2021, it partnered with Connecting Chicago, a non-profit which provides free virtual tutoring for students across the city to distribute over 100 supply kits for their students in need. Recently, The Re-Write It Project had a holiday fundraiser in which it raised over $10,000 and has been able to fund over 1.9K school supply kits with these proceeds. Additionally, the organization is launching a new chapter system, and starting clubs at well-resourced schools to provide more students the opportunity to be involved in the organization’s mission. The Re-Write It Project currently has a club at Walter Payton College Prep and is looking to reach out to other schools in Chicago such as Jones College Prep. Members of the organization are thrilled by the success of the distributions and partnerships and hope to continue making a positive impact by supplying children with the necessary supplies to engage in their education properly. In order to continue to grow and reach more students, The Re-Write Project has four volunteer teams to focus on media, finances, recruitment and outreach, and volunteer management. These teams are the backbone of much of their progress and will continue to strive to aid their expansion.
