Mission Statement
Community Dinners PDX Strives To Create An Equitable Dinner Table Through Shared Meals That Alleviate Social Isolation, Build Community, And Strengthen Under-Served Neighborhoods. We believe in the power of ‘neighboring’, ‘belonging’, and ‘hospitality’. We’re in this together! Whatever the ‘this’ is for your life or community, neighbors looking out for and supporting one another is the soil in which communities thrive. That fosters a place of belonging. We may not always agree, but if we belong in this community and this community belongs to us, then we will have roots that grow deep in this neighborhood. Hospitality goes beyond setting the actual dinner table. It is preparing our hearts and minds to sit with our neighbors and share a piece of life that deserves care, respect, and love.
About This Cause
Community Dinners provides a free, warm meal for residents of low-income apartment communities throughout the urban core of Portland. We are less about the food resourcing side of things and much more about building community and lessening the impact of social isolation. Our process is simple: First, we partner with food gleaning organizations and run our monthly menu by them to see what food items they have for us. From there we meet at one of our partner's commercial kitchens and our "Kitchen Crew" prepares the meal for that specific community. The Resident Service Coordinators along with volunteers from inside and outside the community come together to "set the table". That's our term for preparing a place of acceptance and belonging in the building's community room. The table is set with linens and flowers, but more importantly laughter, story telling and camaraderie fill the room. We partner with many organizations and individuals because we believe it takes a lot of people to make a community run well. Besides, we aren't trying to create an exclusive community. We want as many neighbors as possible to have an opportunity to shape what their community looks and feels. Join us for dinner, volunteer to cook a meal or chop some vegetables. Help "set the table" with flowers, a great story or simply a warm smile. You're invited to help us create a dinner table the length of the city and as unique as Portland itself.
