About This Cause
Milk Crate Kitchen was started in the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020 with one goal in mind: provide nutrient-dense meals with dignity. Since then, we have provided thousands of prepared meals to thousands of households and unhoused people in and around the Portland, Oregon metro area. Zero-barrier and zero-cost to the meal recipients. We work directly with food growers, farmers, and food businesses to source any food surplus while still of quality and turn these food recovery into cooked meals that are provided fresh, not frozen. To this date, we have provided over 20,000 fresh meals. The families served come from a diverse social, racial, and economic backgrounds including but not limited to: houseless, unsheltered houseless, domestic abuse survivors, low-income working class, students, single parents, refugees, migrant workers, elderly, veterans, disabled, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+. We are a small nonprofit with 2.5 FTE moving food from fresh to cooked and distributing with the help of community volunteers and private donations. These donations help cover the cost of creating family meals and renting a commercial kitchen space.
