Mission Statement
Mission: Marin City is a historically Black community in the third most racially disparate county in California, Marin County. Led by the Zulu saying Ubuntu - “I am because we are,” Marin County Cooperation Team (MCCT) is a partnership-first and Black-led multi-service agency operating out of Marin City and throughout Marin County. MCCT seeks to combat the vast disparities imposed upon the Black community in key issue areas and break down the silos that exist among nonprofits serving the Black community.
About This Cause
Deliberately designed and created to change the economic, socio-emotional, and physical & mental health trajectory of Marin City and for Marin’s Black residents, MCCT has three core pillars--(a) Safety Net Services (SNS), (b) Youth Empowerment (YE), and (c) Community Coalitions (CC). As summarized by our tagline “A New System,” our 3 pillars are systems & solutions oriented. Coined MCCT’s “support system”, SNS breaks down the siloed system of social service delivery to create an integrated approach. Coined MCCT’s “opportunity system,” our YE programs are designed to dismantle the systems preventing Black youth from having opportunities to grow, and creating opportunities to thrive. As MCCT’s “social system”, our CCs foster community-based groups that best understand the cultural needs and local dynamics. (1) SNS: Our SNS Program provides a holistic wrap-around approach to meet community members’ emergent and basic needs. Support ranges from securing housing to providing rental or utility assistance, and from 1-time support to continuous case management. This year, MCCT launched programming for Golden Gate Village (GGV) residents through the GGV Resident Empowerment Fund. First, we are continuing to provide our historical SNS as described above. Second, we launched a 5-month Intensive Case Management (ICM) empowerment program where 15-20 GGV residents receive 1:1 goal-setting coaching from our SNS Director, and weekly life skills workshops covering topics such as financial literacy, employment, voting, mental health, physical health, self-advocacy, nutrition, and more. Here, we seek to foster long-term self-sufficiency and resiliency for our ICM clients. (2) YE: Our flagship YE programs include our Golf Program, Internship Program, School to Life Project (“STLP”), and Frederick Leon Marcus Youth Academy (FLMYA). The STLP: The STLP interrupts the special education-to-prison pipeline through social, emotional and academic mentors for Black, neurodiverse, 3rd-6th grade children with IEPs or 504 plans in the Sausalito-Marin City School District (SMCSD). Having received funding through Marin’s Participatory Budgeting, the program will launch this academic year in SMCSD. Mentors will provide 30 minutes/week of direct mentorship and attend monthly program events. The parent component of the STLP, “Parents Without Borders”, creates a complete cycle of support for participants’ families, including access to SNS and monthly parent meetings. Our goal is to provide a supportive space where families feel heard, understood, and assisted. The FLMYA: The FLMYA is designed to uplift, transform, and empower youth by providing healing support, enriching students’ futures and creating civic-minded leaders. Through structured curriculum, guest speakers, and quarterly field trips, middle schoolers have weekly 1-hour sessions in personal/leadership development; civic engagement; social justice; community building; health/wellness practices; financial literacy/literacy; and trauma response. Golf Program: In partnership with the MVGC, middle schoolers receive monthly, free golf range access, golf clubs and balls, coaching from a Golf Pro, instruction and mentorship. Internship Program: Marin City high schoolers and adults participate in a paid internship program focusing on practical and bona-fide workplace experience, and exposure, education, and practice in civic engagement in various career fields within different Mill Valley departments. In addition, MCCT has 3 YE programs addressing the unique needs of transitional age youth (TAY): (a) a Youth Action Board, integrating TAY into leadership spaces within Marin’s homelessness systems; (b) the Vision Project (VP), a holistic mentorship program for Marin City TAY; and (c) Case Management for Southern Marin TAY who are unhoused with the goal of reaching 180 unduplicated youth. As a part of the VP funding, we have built a TAY Center at First Missionary Baptist Church, a local faith-based organization in Marin City. All VP and YAB participants have access to this safe space for essential supplies (food, toilets), TV/computer lab, games, lounge areas, technology charging stations, and more. 3) Community Coalitions: Based on our community trust in Marin City, MCCT leads a number of CCs focused on convening community partners to equitably address: (1) public health response in the Southern Marin Community Resiliency Team (SM CRT); (2) food systems in the Marin City Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Community Action Team (CAT); and (3) underage substance use in the Southern Marin Substance Use Prevention Coalition. In the SM CRT, we have partnered closely with Kaiser Permanente to provide large community health events, including a Diabetes Awareness Day and Heart & Student Health Day. On October 29th, we will be hosting a Women's Health Day. In partnership with a number of local Marin City organizations, Kaiser Permanente, Marin Community Clinics, Marin Health, and Marin City Health & Wellness Center, we will offer free mobile Mammograms, a community health panel and healthy cooking demonstration, 1:1 health consults, a raffle and more. As the lead agency for the Marin City HEAL CAT, we developed 3 community-driven food system priorities for implementation: (1) a community garden collective; (2) supporting food retailers in selling food for profit; and (3) creating a youth horticulture program. Over 6-months in 2023, MCCT supported 8 Black Marin City home cooks with bi-weekly capacity-building training on both the business and food aspects of being a food retailer. The CBI program had designated curriculum and extensive one-on-one support from MCCT’s Program Director, Celebrity Chef and Master Gardener, Curtis Aikens. 2 CBI participants were accepted into AIM’s Farmer’s Market through its Racial Equity Fund, and MCCT facilitated the award of thousands of dollars in catering contracts for CBI members. We will have a 2024-2025 cohort. In January, MCCT also began revitalizing the garden at SMCSD’s Phillips Drive Campus. Our program has two components: (1) overseeing the garden revitalization and crop production and (2) co-teaching a garden elective, 3 times a week for 1-hour. For (2) this year, we are partnering with Bridge the Gap's after school program for 10 middle schoolers.
