Mission Statement

Founded in January 2016, the UndocuBlack Network (UBN) is a multi-generational network of currently and formerly undocumented Black people that fosters community, facilitates access to resources, and advocates to transform the realities of our people, so we are thriving and living our fullest lives. UBN strives towards our mission by developing the leadership of our members, building power with and for our community through community organizing, advocacy, cultivating strategic alliances, and centering the humanity, dignity, and well-being of our communities in all aspects of our work. The communities in the UndocuBlack network include but are not limited to, currently and formerly undocumented young people, elders, students, differently-abled people, entrepreneurs, LGBTQ+ people, houseless and unhoused people, formerly incarcerated people, and people holding temporary legal status. Our vision is to foster inclusive immigrant rights and racial justice movements that advocate for the rights of, and provide support, healing, and community to those with intersecting identities.

About This Cause

To fulfill our mission and enhance the lives of UndocuBlack Community members, we employ diverse strategies, including: Fostering Community Building and Networking: We have established a network of UndocuBlack Community members across the United States, representing communities in over thirty states. This network serves as a safe space for members to develop kinship with others in their community, uplifting the stories of the UndocuBlack Community nationwide. Community Wellness and Other Resources: UBN developed the inaugural Mental Wellness Initiative to expand the dialogue around the unique mental health and wellness needs of the UndocuBlack Community. This initiative eases barriers to care and facilitates nationwide mental wellness discussions. UBN has created resources such as the UBN Guide for Mental Wellness Specialists, the Alive and Well Discussion Series, Alive and Well Fellowships, and Ayanda, an in-person and online community-building program in which UndocuBlack Community members across the nation are paired with “Cousins” to develop and grow relationships and reduce isolation. With additional capacity and support, we plan to deepen and build new relationships with organizational partners to facilitate access to other free or low-cost resources for our community, including but not limited to legal, health, housing, and educational resources. Organizing Learning Opportunities and Leadership Development: We empower the UndocuBlack Community through online resources, virtual and in-person learning initiatives, and educational programs that foster a comprehensive understanding of policies and practices affecting their daily lives. Additionally, we provide dedicated resources, training, and programs specifically designed to nurture leadership skills among UndocuBlack Community members. Advocating for the UndocuBlack Community: We amplify the stories and experiences of community members through various media channels, offering unique perspectives on immigration, racial justice, and mental health issues. Through public education efforts, local organizing, and alliances with stakeholders, we tirelessly advocate for the needs and rights of the UndocuBlack Community.
