Mission Statement

The Mission of Junior Achievement is To Inspire and Prepare Young People to Succeed in a Global Economy.

About This Cause

Junior Achievement of Utah was established as an after-school program in 1955 and began its in-school programs in 1985 to educate Utah’s students in work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. JA’s proven programs and volunteer role models provide students with the positive realizations and reinforcement of career aspirations, an understanding of money management, and exposure to the benefits of business ownership that help overcome negative, competing environmental factors (peer pressure, lack of understanding or support in community, etc.). The JA experience helps foster the self-belief and sense of purpose necessary for young people to overcome challenging circumstances. JA's volunteer-delivered, kindergarten-12th grade programs foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy skills, and use experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential. JA’s traditional in-class program delivery model is built around volunteers coming into the classroom so that students can learn from the expertise of professionals as well as see strong role models that work in their communities. In a recent alumni study, 51 percent reported currently working or having worked in the same field as one of their JA volunteers, further illustrating the impact of JA’s mentorship programs. For the past 13 years, JA of Utah has operated an experiential learning site for students, Spencer F. Eccles Junior Achievement City (JA City) to learn life-changing concepts through a simulated economy or personal finance scenario. JA City provides hands-on learning through JA BizTown for 5th graders and Finance Park for 8th graders. The challenges presented to students because of the Covid-19 pandemic make the concepts of Junior Achievement more relevant than ever, and JA of Utah seeks to continue to support our students and provide our programs at this critical time. We work with educators and volunteers to deliver programs to Utah students in all modes of learning including in-person, virtual, or hybrid.
