Mission Statement
Odyssey House of Utah has provided life-changing substance abuse treatment in the Salt Lake Valley since 1971 to adolescents, adults, and families in need. Of the 4,300+ community members served annually, over 80 percent are low-income, and nearly all have a diagnosed mental illness. If untreated, these individuals face the inevitable conclusion of prolonged substance abuse: life in a mental institution, incarceration, or premature death. Our mission is to help them reclaim their lives through effective and affordable substance abuse treatment, prevention, and mental health services.
About This Cause
At Odyssey House, our mission is to help people understand their true potential, free of drugs and alcohol. Founded in 1971 as a 501(c)3 non-profit, Odyssey has a solid reputation of providing effective interventions for those struggling with addiction, mental health, and physical health issues. With cornerstone programs for teens, adults, mothers with children, and fathers with children, services are rooted in an agency wide commitment to treating the whole person to ensure lifelong recovery. Our programs are built on evidence-based, best practice models, and designed to help people successfully overcome each barrier they may face. We place intense emphasis on mental health, education, work training, physical health, family, housing, and personal accountability. Through these methods, the individuals and families we serve change their lives, remain sober, and become contributing members of the community. The individuals we serve graduate treatment in good health, with secure housing, and stable employment. Odyssey House is the model for substance use disorder treatment in the Intermountain area, and received three Best of State awards in 2015, recognizing our agency for Best Mental Health Services, Best Youth Treatment Program, and Best Charitable Service Organization. Our CEO and program directors are regularly invited to present information describing how we accomplished our current level of success utilizing the Therapeutic Community (TC) method. We benefit from over 110 years of combined experience in the field of addiction treatment accumulated by our six program directors and Clinical Director and COO Christina Zidow. The TC treatment method successfully employed by Odyssey House for over 45 years is accredited by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as a research-based best practice. Our agency is Joint Commission accredited, meeting superior standards of client safety and clinical environment of care. We are on the Utah State’s Health Reform Task Force and report to many nationwide foundations. Individualized treatment may include: group therapy, individual and family counseling, vocational training, high school education, life skills training, medication management, transitional housing, and specialized treatment, such as grief therapy or anger management. Adult Residential Treatment Program (1971) - a therapeutic community treating men and women, ages 18 and up, who are extremely dysfunctional due to a long history of substance abuse. Vocational training and gradual transition are emphasized (average stay is 6-9 months). Adolescent Residential Treatment Program (1976) - a therapeutic community treating adolescents, ages 13-18, who may have a wide variety of problems, including substance abuse, antisocial behaviors, and/or emotional problems. Youth also participate in Odyssey Academy, our fully accredited alternative school. Parents with Children Program - the Women with Children Program opened in 1994 followed by the Fathers with Children program in 2005. These residential programs serve addicted parents with minor children, as well as pregnant women, allowing the family to maintain intact while emphasizing parenting skill development. Children’s Services Center (2000) - a therapeutic child development center, providing services for the children in our Parents and Children Programs while their parents are in treatment. Most of these children have been abused and neglected and require as much treatment as the parents. Outpatient Programs (1999) – standard & intensive, serving adults and adolescents who are dysfunctional due to addiction, but are able to maintain safety and sobriety at a lower level of care. Adolescent In-Home Services (2009) – serving at-risk adolescents and their families in the home. Parenting skills, healthy communication skills, and substance abuse prevention for the teen are a focus. Transitional Housing Program (1990) is available to graduates from any Salt Lake County drug/alcohol counseling program. This is a structured living situation for 76 residents who require a supportive, drug and alcohol free living situation for a 6-9 month reentry period after leaving residential treatment. First month's rent is free to help residents get back on their feet financially. All clients follow individual aftercare plans, which include a requirement to be either employed or attending school. Weekly family meetings are directed by an Odyssey House graduate responsible for 24-hour supervision of the Transition House. Odyssey House’s Sober Living Program is the only such program in Utah that accommodates families. Martindale Integrated Medical Clinic (2012) – opened with a primary goal to serve the more than 12,000 Utahns who are uninsured, struggling with addiction, and ineligible for care at other medical clinics. This population relies heavily on local ERs for treatment of chronic health issues, and our aim is to provide them with the comprehensive care needed to get healthy, stay healthy, and maintain long term sobriety. Odyssey Academy, an accredited alternative school, opened in 1971 primarily to serve residents of Odyssey House's treatment programs who had not yet completed High School. The Director of Education, three part time teachers, and two aides make up the school staff. Focus is on basic education and remediation. Small class size, 12:1 student to teacher ratio, individualized educational planning, personal attention, and computer skills are integral components of this positive learning setting. Students with learning disabilities receive individualized instruction and tutoring, and students planning to attend college are prepared for college entry level exams and requirements. The Academy operates on a year round basis and serves approximately 80 students annually. Vocational Training: Vocational Training (VT) is a critical component of our Adult Residential Program. As clients enter VT, they rotate through a series of on-site cleaning and cooking positions to learn time management, effective communication and basic professionalism. After mastering these skills, they earn positions of heightened responsibility to qualify for work in our Upholstery Shop or as part of our construction team. These sheltered workshops give clients a chance to briefly reenter the community, work with actual customers, and boost personal and professional skills. Confidence and self-worth increase, a critical aspect of the therapeutic process to achieve long-term sobriety. Clients in the final stage of treatment who are able to manage the stressors and responsibilities of customer-driven employment may participate in our Private Industry Vocational Training Program (PIVT), an enterprise with local businesses to provide clients with a unique chance to gain work experience, build a professional network and earn income. Besides technical skills, clients gain training in problem solving techniques, job safety, punctuality, marketing, purchasing, billing, and effective communication. After graduation, clients are able to find meaningful employment with skills acquired during VT.
