Mission Statement
SB Dance’s mission is to create original art for curious people. Through innovative directing and teamwork, the company strives to find novel ways of presenting its work at concerts, cultural events, and community gatherings. SB Dance believes that the experience of live art connects humanity and inspires positive change in the world.
About This Cause
Since its founding in 1996. SB Dance has presented one original evening-length creation per year. Director StephenBrown creates and choreographs every piece in collaboration with a close-knit team of performers, designers, and composers. SB Dance works in multiple disciplines that include dance, theater, musicals, immersive, and multi-media shows. Guided by an active board of directors and run by artists, Brown and his team make executive decisions about resource allocation, scheduling, and other operations. SB Dance has been recognized with two NEA awards,Cirque du Soleil La Bourse Talon, Salt Lake City Mayor’s Award, and decades of support from foundations and public agencies. Always seeking new outlets for its work, SB Dance has a long history of organizing community-wide events and diverse partnerships. Working with Sundance Film Festival, Utah Film Commission, and Salt Lake County, SB Dance created Fest Salt Lake, a two-week initiative to activate Salt Lake’s downtown area during the fi lm festival. Another initiative—Eat Drink SLC—grew into the region’s premier food and libation festival, notable for its inclusion of dance, opera, and music. During the 2020 shutdown, SB Dance drew on its expertise in creation, production, off -site programming, and community partnerships. The result was a novel mobile concept called Curbside Theater. It took place outdoors, with abundant ventilation and space for social distancing. It was free with an option to donate. The company planned to perform until the money ran out. It never did, and, during the fi rst year of the pandemic, Curbside Theater was presented 100 times to 1,500 people. As the pandemic abated, SB Dance recognized Curbside’s potential to reach audiences far more diverse than the company’s historic demographic of theater-goers. Rather than returning to pre-pandemic programming, SB Dance surrendered its coveted residency status at theater center and chose to go all in on Curbside Theater.
