Mission Statement

The mission of the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation (TASF) is to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen by providing motivation, access, and scholarships to high performing, low-income students seeking careers in aviation, aerospace, STEM, and beyond. Our ultimate goal is to diversify the workforce, making it a more equitable environment in which to work, where equality for all is a core standard and value.

About This Cause

TASF is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization founded in 1978 in order to provide educational and charitable services designed to honor living and deceased members of the Tuskegee Airmen. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California the 13-member Board of Directors is comprised of Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen (DOTAs), corporate partners and community leaders committed to providing leadership by ensuring that funds are available to help young people take their first steps toward college and subsequently a rewarding career. With an initial goal of raising one million dollars, seed money came from pledges, contributions, and the proceeds of a Memorial Banquet honoring General Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. The goal was achieved in 1997 and in 2015 the fund balance reached $2.3 million. Each year the number of scholarships that are available is directly related to income from this investment fund and the level of financial gifts provided by caring donors, historians, educators, faith communities, as well as active and retired servicemen and aviation enthusiast. Since its inception in 1978, TASF has provided over 1,400 scholarships totaling nearly $2 million. Each year, with the help of dedicated volunteers, 40 scholarship recipients are selected from around the country. Collaborating with some fifty chapters in the US and the Virgin Islands, high-performing, low-income students receive scholarships ranging from $1,500 - $5,000 to attend accredited schools of their choice. Although aviation, aerospace, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) is our focus, talented students in other career fields are selected as well. Awards are given without regard to race, gender, or national origin, with approximately 64% going to African American students, 15% Latinx, 10% Asian, and the remainder disbursed among self-reporting biracial, and white students. Students receiving TASF scholarships have far reaching interests and are academically suited for success in college and beyond. Recipients have gone on to achieve great accolades in business, social sciences, medicine, communications, political science, accounting, engineering, as well as aerospace and aviation. They have launched careers working with such companies as Rockwell Collins, Boeing and Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. Recipients have attended prestigious educational institutions such as Harvard, Rutgers, MIT as well as California’s best institutions like UC Berkeley, Stanford and USC. Recipients have attended well over 300 different institutions in pursuit of educational excellence. Many cite the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation as an enabling force that helped satisfy a critical financial demand for books, college fees, and tuition. In order for TASF to remain consistent in its mission impact, more funds are needed from sources outside of the organization. The organization seeks to increase the size and number of scholarships therefore keeping pace with the financial demands of attending college. In 2018, TASF launched its first donor-advised fund to create perpetually named scholarships honoring a Tuskegee Airman. With a gift of $25,000, a named scholarship is created and a $1,5000 scholarship is given in the name of the Airman in perpetuity. Two such awards are the Elwood T. Driver and the Brig Gen Charles Mcgee Memorial Scholarship. Both Red Tails pilots, McGee has a 30-year career, flying combat missions in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Driver was appointed by then President Jimmy Carter to the National Safety Transportation Board after retiring for military service. Donors have the capacity to change the trajectory of underserved students by connecting with our mission and joining our team.
