About This Cause
Neighborhoods Focused On African-American Youth, Inc. (“NFOAAY”) is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization focused on positively changing the outcome of youth. On December 22, 2004, NFOAAY launched an initiative to address the high school graduation rate crisis. NFOAAY commenced replication of the HFM Community Study Hall model. Since its inception, NFOAAY has been working to affect positive change in the outcomes of youth in economically challenged neighborhoods facing serious challenges in ensuring that their youth remain in school, receive high school diplomas, and continue on to college. NFOAAY is focused on motivating and helping neighborhood residents to organize and to establish an infrastructure of support, providing long-term, free, accessible academic support for the youth of its neighborhood. This resident-led initiative, focused on youth development, is called Community Study Hall (CSH). CSH is a neighborhood after-school program convening two to five days each week from 3:30P.M. to 6:00P.M. for youth ranging in age from 3 to 18. Community Study Hall focuses on providing Homework Assistance, Reading/Mathematics Skill Enhancement, Technology Skill Development, STEM Workshops, and Life Skills Workshops. Over the eleven years, NFOAAY has secured more than a million dollars in funding to secure and acquire the academic resources and experiences which have resulted in improved student academic performance, increased student motivation, and more positive student behavior. Since 2005, NFOAAY has supported three neighborhoods in the implementation, ongoing operations, and sustaining of their neighborhood after school programs, specifically Canty Homes Community Study Hall, South Atlanta Community Study Hall, and Warren Williams Community Study Hall. NFOAAY’s fund development support resulted in Canty CSH & RG/DT CSH being awarded Georgia Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center grants. The NFOAAY staff promotes and assists in Neighborhood Organizing and youth program development. After mobilizing the neighborhood residents and the neighborhood’s decision to organize around its youth, NFOAAY serves as a “jump start” team member working jointly with residents to: • Provide leadership and guidance on how to formally organize, effective operating principles, and effective operating practices • Conduct both Neighborhood Organizing and Community Study Hall workshops • Communicate status of project on an ongoing basis to residents and volunteers • Orchestrate and assist in neighborhood youth recruitment and registration for Community Study Hall • Recruit volunteers for Community Study Hall • Write grants to purchase educational resources, equipment, and supplies for Community Study Hall • Identify required educational resources and supplies • Secure approvals for neighborhood facility to house the Community Study Hall • Assist resident leaders in customizing and planning the preliminary implementation of Community Study Hall • Assist in ongoing training and retention of volunteers for Community Study Hall • Assist in ongoing operation of Community Study Hall • Orchestrate Parent Sharing Sessions & family learning activities Improvements in students’ academic outcomes, behavior, and motivation to achieve have already been realized. NFOAAY will continue to work aggressively to motivate and enable residents of impoverished neighborhoods to take ownership of and leadership in effectively addressing youth-related issues at the neighborhood level, especially the critical issue of academic under-achievement.
