Mission Statement

Prism Moves was created to fill service gaps in the fitness industry, which historically centers white, thin, cis, heteronormative individuals and rarely makes room for those that do not fit this description, thereby creating a lack of health equity. Women, BIPOC individuals, LGBTQIA2+ individuals, larger-bodied humans and those that want to move their bodies for joy instead of weight loss rarely have access to fitness spaces that accommodate them and make them feel welcome. Prism Moves was created to become such a fitness space. Follow us on Instagram at prismmoves.

About This Cause

The communities that Prism Moves serves are the same communities that experience wage gaps and other income and job disparities, meaning that the generally accepted gym fees of $185 a month and above are not accessible. Prism Moves offers sliding scale memberships, free memberships and a once-a-week free BIPOC class. Prism Moves addresses health equity not only through offering affordable and free gym enrollments, but through deliberate inclusion. Many of our current clients are women, non-binary, transgender, BIPOC, LGBTQIA2+ and larger-bodied humans that do not typically feel welcomed in normal gym settings. Their gym experiences have resulted in feelings of being sexualized, tokenized, being misgendered, and shamed for not having the "ideal" body type. Our organization specifically works to create an environment in which these harmful experiences do not occur. Prism Moves works with other non-profit organizations that serve similar communities. Our partners include The Black Parent Initiative (BPI), which works with low to moderate-income Black families with children ages 0-10, SMYRC, which offers a safe, harassment-free space for queer and trans youth ages 13-23 and Already Strong, which works with sexual assault survivors. Prism Moves has seen an increase in the need for our services. The populations Prism Moves serves continually experience high risk of chronic, non-communicable diseases (such as depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease) that are preventable by diminishing social health inequalities. Our clients also experience a lack of stable community, for reasons that include no longer being in touch with their family due to being queer. Supporting Prism Moves and its community will arguably increase the health of numerous individuals for many years to come. Over the next 5 years and beyond, Prism Moves aims to increase the number of individuals that utilize its services without accessibility barriers. Out of 160 members, Prism Moves currently has 30 members utilizing the sliding scale pricing and 30 members utilizing the once-a-week free BIPOC class. With additional funding, these numbers and Prism Moves outreach could increase drastically. In addition to local impact, Prism Moves wants to positively influence the overall fitness industry. The fitness industry thrives off body shaming, the constant pursuit of weight loss and the perfect body, and gender normative behaviors. These values intimidate and dissuade many of the humans Prism Moves serves from ever attempting to join a gym. Prism Moves wants help create change in the industry by setting the example for how to be an inclusive and welcoming gym.
