Mission Statement
The remedy can only come from becoming. To create the world we want and deserve requires long term, future-facing thinking and action. They key to change across so many of our most pressing issues—from the economy and climate to civic engagement and health—hinges on our ability to look beyond our current systems toward a future that sustains and heals us. In order to do something different and to be something different, we must be forceful in our intention, attention, and action. What if we fanned and fed the practices, people, and ideas that are living into a transformed future right now and made that future more real? We can unravel our ideas about what is supposed to be and instead think about what we actually want and behave accordingly. At Next River, we believe that we can be time travelers. We get to the future we want and deserve by practicing it now. That is the opportunity in front of us. That is the promise of Next River.
About This Cause
Next River is an institute for practicing the future. Part culture change lab, part think tank, part ecosystem builder, Next River does research that reveals solutions being practiced in the margins of our country, nurtures leaders and leadership models that point us toward our collective vitality, and recasts fundamental concepts like liberty and labor to unshackle them from the inertia of history and the status quo. We move conversation, culture, and resources to nourish the people and communities whose ways of being, doing, and relating point us toward the audacious change this moment–and our future–demand. Our work enables the civic engagement that builds and maintains real democracy, the leadership that pushes our workplaces and economies to evolve, the thinking and behavior that creates racial, gender, and economic justice, and the culture and values that prioritize our collective wellbeing and longevity. We celebrate the spark of ancient wisdom and the snap of innovation. Across our work we create fundamental shifts in attention, energy, and resources to cultivate more freedom, more mutuality, more vulnerability, and more healing by making what was marginal central.
