Mission Statement
Reading to the Rescue is a nonprofit organization bringing rescue dogs to children to practice their reading skills in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Studies have shown that children who read to dogs not only improve their reading skills, but also gain a greater enjoyment of reading. Many of our dog volunteers are Pitbull mixes and we like to think of them as breed ambassadors. Our human volunteers teach children how to approach a dog, how to pet and safely give treats. Some of our dogs have come from abusive environments, so we also like to emphasize the importance of compassion, adopting a pet instead of shopping for a puppy and spay/neuter in an age appropriate manner.
About This Cause
Library/School Program: Our library program promotes children's literacy by having children read to non-judgmental rescue dogs. Either in person at Libraries, Parks, Schools or other requested locations, or over Zoom, our dog volunteers who have come from shelters and rescues listen to children read and encourage them (through their human dog handlers) to keep up their reading between events so children can show the dogs how much they’ve improved. Studies have shown that children who read to dogs not only improve their reading skills, but also gain a greater enjoyment of reading. All our dog volunteers are certified Canine Good Citizens through the American Kennel Club. Many are Pitbull mixes who act as ambassadors for their breed. Our human volunteers teach children how to approach a dog, how to pet and safely give treats. Some of our dogs have come from abusive environments, so we also like to emphasize the importance of compassion, adopting a pet instead of shopping for a puppy and spay/neuter in an age-appropriate manner. Adoption/Animal Welfare Events: Same structure as above but with necessary adjustments according to the venue and/or activities. Angel’s Fund: Angel’s Fund was created to help animals at risk of euthanasia for treatable medical conditions.
