Mission Statement
Mission Statement: To partner, to collaborate with other non-profits and state agencies to empower the quality of life for those we serve in Southside Virginia.
About This Cause
We aim to transform the underlying assumptions from the conventional method of giving people a pre-packed bag of food to enabling clients to choose their food with respect. For the past 23 years, we have conversed with hundreds of clients who have faced food insecurity, showing compassion for their coping mechanisms. These experiences motivated us to comprehend the problem and its root causes and attempt to devise long term solutions. This idea was conceived during COVID-19. We started to focus on fostering relationships between guests and our volunteer staff. There is no single solution to hunger, but there are inventive approaches with a new way of thinking. Reimagining and rebranding demand imagination, trying inventive approaches and being creative. Community Resource Services Mission will be a community center where guests come for food, connection and more. It will be designed to be an empowering place to provide more than food. We will offer comprehensive and pragmatic tools with wrap around services. CRS will formulate nutrition policies, advocate for federal nutrition programs, and create pathways to stability. Recipes and food demonstration classes will be offered. Diverse community agencies, other non-profits and local businesses will be arranged to come to explain their programs and services. CRS thrives with a constant flow of activity as our clients and volunteers interact. Our volunteer base continually trains on enhancing hospitality and customer service to our clients. This kind of food pantry will provide food, but also serve as a catalyst for stability, food security, and well-being so people will not need to depend on the food pantry long-term. It is our aspiration to promote health and stability of families and create a bridge for self-reliance rather than merely a short-term remedy of food. Our ultimate goal is to create bridges out of poverty. Health care providers are finding inventive ways to increase access to healthy food and reduce health disparities. Our emphasis will be on offering healthy options of fresh produce. This food hub will serve as a community space where guests will be empowered rather than stigmatized. We are shifting from emergency to empowerment. We have created a more hospitable, respectful, and empowering culture. When people take the step to go to a food pantry to receive charitable food, we want to avoid harming their self-esteem and self-respect. There is a negative stigma attached to going to a food pantry and is often humbling and embarrassing. We will provide a waiting area that is well lit rather than standing outside in the rain and cold.. Providing people with the respect to select their own food at a food pantry has created an environment that helps people help themselves. This new model shifts the focus from a scarcity of food to strategies that build empathy, equity, and political will. We will promote health and financial well-being and reduce stigma and inequities. I hope you will heed the call to assist in impacting our rural community. Solutions range from providing Client Choice with individuals selecting their own food with respect, to providing a job board, job training programs.
