Mission Statement

Hyp-ACCESS develops multi-field care access for common & neglected Hypermobile conditions from a foundation of People’s Science & Disability Justice. We are establishing a future where hypermobility is recognized as a common disability, and all spaces provide accessible resources tailored to our growing community’s historical context.

About This Cause

Hyp-ACCESS is a Hypermobile-specific disability accessibility organization working at the intersection of art, science, and disability. Our work traverses medical research, care access coordination & advocacy, Hypermobile Accessible Proprioceptive Therapy (HAPT), accessible movement programming, education & consulting, long covid support, & medical system transformation. Hyp-ACCESS's care justice infrastructure currently serves Hypermobile people or "Hyps", a term we coined, worldwide. Hypermobile people make up 20% of the population, yet Hyp-ACCESS is the only care justice organization for Hyps in the world. We are a team of disabled, queer and trans Hypermobile people with only 2 full-time staff. In less than 3 years, we have served over 3000 people! 2022-2023 has been a seminal year for Hyp-ACCESS: We gained 501(c)3 status; we received a Creatives Rebuild New York Artist Employment Program grant, securing two years of organizational funding from Tides Center. This highly competitive program funded only 4% of 2,700 applicants statewide. And we are the only NYC-based disabled-run organization funded. Our momentum is growing at a critical time: Healthcare markets are tipping in our favor; hospital conglomerates fail to serve the majority of people, and COVID long-haulers are presenting with the same health problems Hyp-ACCESS has the most experience with - the time to act is NOW. Hyp-ACCESS is the future of medicine - JOIN US! Check out our plans for The Hyp+ Community Care Center here: www.hyp-clinic.org Who is impacted by Hyp conditions and disabilities? Do I know someone in my life? Why should I care? The short answer is - you DO! 1 in 5 people are impacted in some way by widespread hypermobility, which is a multi-system, multi-symptom experience. People more frequently impacted include people with uteruses, people of color, queer, trans, and gender non-comforming people, and neurodivergent people. The Hypermobile care landscape is founded on biased misinformation, or no information at all. Conditions and treatments are not taught in medical school, leaving Hypermobile people severely under-cared for in the medical system. In solidarity, Audre & L Co-founders & co-directors
