Mission Statement

We provide transparency to measure equality in the criminal legal system. Our Mission is to use technology to uncover trends and identify structural change opportunities across the legal justice system, driving transparency and fairness for all, regardless of race, age, gender, or socioeconomic standing.

About This Cause

AEJG is the only nonprofit to grow from a 2020 project, win the 2021 Hack for Society Executive and Sponsored challenges, win "Best in Show" in the 2022 Hack for Justice Reform, and be chosen as one of Microsoft's 20x2022 Open Data Collaborations. Your contribution allows us to provide our AEJG Dashboard free of charge to the public, obtain new data sources, and provide additional insights, visualizations, and training to our users. Anthony Powers, our founder and Executive Director, was incarcerated at age 16 and sentenced to 77 years in prison, before obtaining early release due to changes in the law and his strong record of rehabilitation. During his incarceration, Anthony sought to better understand sentencing data as a way to test hypotheses from his experience. After running into numerous access barriers, Anthony quickly realized data transparency for everyone is the foundational input for true equality and justice. Anthony worked with Microsoft volunteers to build a database and dashboard that uncovers sentencing and conviction disparities with marginalized communities with data visualizations in order to bring system change to the justice system. They leveraged Microsoft technology and expertise to help make the world a better, more equitable place for all. Now, voters, legislators, criminal law practitioners, impacted individuals, researchers, and the public have a way to understand the current state of the system or the impact of changes in laws or sentencing guidelines. With the AEJG Equity Dashboard, publicly available adult felony case data is transformed into a more accessible, digestible format -- broken out by a variety of factors including decision makers, county, and demographic characteristics. Users can explore how different races are impacted by conviction disproportionality over time, understand a judge's typical sentencing record compared to other judges, find out how different races are impacted by sentencing disproportionality over time, look up all cases in the state where the person was given more than 20 years in prison even though they were under 18 years old, or understand if the proportionality comparisons are statistically significant. AEJG provides this access to centralized and up to date data to improve understanding and action. Criminal legal system actors get to see what their peers or own agencies or doing. Everyone can get more immediate insight into decisions, the impacts of decisions, or biases, on a wide scale.
