Mission Statement
Our mission at Bristlecone Family Resources is to support, empower, and encourage individuals to reclaim their lives by providing behavioral health services for drug, alcohol, and gambling addictions and co-occurring disorders. Through our holistic approach to each client, we strive to have our programs be accessible and affordable to meet the critical needs of our community.
About This Cause
Founded in 1966 by the Nevada Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse , Bristlecone was originally designated the Washoe County Council of Alcoholism and Drugs. In 2003, after redefining services to accommodate the changing needs of the community, a merger with Sagewind (Adolescent Substance Abuse/ Treatment Facility) and service expansion gave birth to the agency’s current incarnation, Bristlecone Family Resources, now Northern Nevada’s oldest, and one of the largest, addiction treatment facility dedicated to helping individuals and their families. Bristlecone’s mission is to help people reclaim their lives by providing customized addiction and mental wellness treatment services, addressing client needs on an individual basis. The agency helps individuals pursue recovery, avoid substance abuse and/or gambling, and address co-occurring mental health issues. We maintain high standards of accountability and utilize evidence-based practices. The agency’s approach is family-focused and assesses the needs of the client and their family in providing customized services appropriate to the individual. The need for mental health and substance abuse services is great in northern Nevada, with limited beds and facilities to serve the vulnerable, low-to-moderate income individuals and families. Situated close to downtown Reno, Bristlecone largely serves individuals residing within Reno/Sparks. However Bristlecone clients have also come from all over the state as well as surrounding states. Many clients struggle with mental health comorbidities, homelessness, and unemployment. Bristlecone also serves many individuals with most co-occurring mental health conditions, with the exception of psychosis. Until now, Bristlecone has addressed the mental health issues of its clients through a semi-integrated approach, utilizing Peer Support Specialists, CADCs, LADCs, MFTs, LCSW-Intern, and Case Managers, while referring our clients with more severe psychiatric conditions that may require supervised medication to our community partners. Bristlecone has created strategic, mutually beneficial relationships with Child Protective Services, Juvenile Probation, Probation, Adult Drug Court, Family Drug Court, Veterans Affairs, United States District Court, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, local homeless shelters, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and other community partners. Services provided include screenings, assessments, individualized counseling, group counseling, case management, withdrawal management, residential treatment services and transitional living for substance use and gambling addiction. Additional Aftercare Services are provided that include supportive services for clients with children, open court cases, veterans issues, and more. Bristlecone Family Resources partners with the Veterans Administration to support veterans in need of treatment, housing, employment, and transitional living services; those same services are given to those with co-occurring issues, CPS cases, the homeless, and any others in need of treatment. Our four-story building enables us to provide a full outpatient services office on the 1st floor, residential treatment services for men (2nd floor) and women (3rd floor), and administrative offices throughout the facility and on the 4th floor. In addition, our site provides a transitional living facility for clients, including veterans, within close proximity to RTC bus stops, hospitals including the VA hospital, the courthouse and other service providers that clients may access.
