Mission Statement
Galilee is the camp and retreat center of the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada. The Episcopal Church is an inclusive and welcoming community of diverse Christians in the United States and 17 other nations, all part of the global Anglican Communion. As a church, we strive to come closer to one another and to God as we serve the world and work for justice and peace. At Galilee, we help children and adults alike grow in their service of and care for God’s people and creation. Wherever you are on your journey, when you come here you can count on finding gracious acceptance, spiritual and physical nurture, and renewal. It is a community where we can deepen our faith together and become better equipped to carry out our calling in the world. At Galilee we are intentional in minimizing our environmental impact. We also strive to operate as a learning laboratory, where all who come here will be inspired to live as conscientious stewards of creation and gain new tools and information for bringing this way of life back home. Some of our practices include: 1. Fostering closer relationships with nature: We strongly believe that the more people connect with the natural world, the more they will be committed to caring well for it. By helping people dive into the stunning beauty of Lake Tahoe and our surrounding wilderness, we trust that everyone will come away with a renewed sense of awe and responsibility for this incredible gift. 2. Composting all organics: We collect all food waste and other organic matter, like paper napkins and tea bags. This waste is then composted off-site and turned into useful fertilizer. 3. Minimizing waste: We work to minimize packaging and other waste at camp, i.e. we encourage people to use reusable water bottles. We recycle everything that is accepted locally. 4. Prioritizing green building practices: As we move forward with new building and renovation projects around camp, we work hard to prioritize sustainable building practices as much as possible. An excellent example of this commitment is the new insulation in Hunting Lodge, made from recycled blue jeans. We have also begun incorporating more natural building practices, seen most impressively in our earthen pizza oven! 5. Practicing Leave No Trace: We educate all our staff and campers in the philosophy of “Leave No Trace” outdoor adventuring. In living out these principles, we strive to both minimize our impact and also leave the wilderness around us more pristine than we found it.
About This Cause
Nestled right on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, Galilee is known for its stunning beauty, warm hospitality, and life-changing programs for youth and adults alike. Galilee offers a peaceful and comfortable setting for groups year-round. In our Galilee summer camp programs, campers and staff form an intentional Christian community where all are welcome regardless of their religious background. Together we gather for lively worship each morning, filled with song, playful drama, and meaningful discussions. In smaller groups, campers have the opportunity to delve into hard questions and think together about how they want to shape their lives. Campers explore spirituality through activities like reflective art projects, walking the labyrinth, outdoor adventures on Lake Tahoe and in the wilderness, and spending time with our chaplains. Our year-round conference center is available for programs for youth, adults and families. Retreats in our incredible setting on the shore of Lake Tahoe are one of the best ways of launching a new project or season, and integrating new members into an existing group. They also help participants strengthen their relationships with one another and deepen their commitment to their program. Retreats can be designed for any religious or non-profit group, including men, women, families, vestries, youth and choirs. Galilee can provide lodging for up to 70 people in our cabins, lodges and dorm. Delicious and wholesome meals can be prepared fresh daily.
