Mission Statement
The Las Vegas Natural History Museum strives to inspire a better understanding and appreciation of the natural world, the sciences, and ourselves through educational exhibits, programming, and research.
About This Cause
Las Vegas Natural History Museum has been at the forefront of creating educational opportunities in Southern Nevada since opening in 1991. The private, nonprofit museum has steadily grown to become a leading educational resource focused on increasing understanding of the sciences, conservation, the environment, Nevada history, natural history and the humanities. Educational exhibits and most programs are offered within the 40,000-square-foot Museum’s Marine Life Gallery, Treasures of Egypt Gallery, Prehistoric Life Gallery, African Savanna Gallery, International Wildlife Gallery, African Rainforest Gallery, Wild Nevada Gallery, Prehistoric Mammals Gallery, Geology Gallery, and Young Scientist Center. Programs are also presented online and in the Museum’s special exhibits space and paleontology lab; the Museum-operated federal and State of Nevada repository; and the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The Museum has been recognized for its quality programming as it has become accredited with the American Alliance of Museums, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, and a member the Association of Science-Technology Centers. Current programs include: PUBLIC PROGRAMS-subject to change. Check website for times and dates. Included with admission or membership • Critter Connections:. Visitors may interact with a different animal resident each week. • Living History is a theater program that interprets the life of Ancient Egyptians. Dates and times vary. • The Richard A Ditton Learning Lab: Museum visitors get to see real science at work. Visitors to the Museum are invited to view the Research and Collections Department's work in the Richard Ditton Learning Lab at the Museum • Science Saturdays: STEM/STEAM based activities • Storytime Sundays: conducted in the International Wildlife Gallery. SCHOOL TOURS • Field Trips: All Explorer programs are aligned to grade level and Academic Content Standards. A field trip to the Museum offers students a way to explore Earth’s wild places, past, and present. Students can interact with scientists and experience scientific discovery, exploration, and innovation. • Home School Programs: Expeditions is a workshop series offered to home school families in southern Nevada. These exciting classes provide a way for families to learn together and gain science enrichment through interactive, hands-on activities that support a wide array of development science skills and concepts as well as learning styles. We are also very proud of The Las Vegas Science & Technology Festival -- Nevada's largest community education event and a family-friendly celebration of science for which the Museum is the lead organizer. Community support has been vital to the Museum’s success. Each and every donation – regardless of size – makes a difference in the Museum’s ability to live its mission “to inspire, through educational exhibits and programs, a better understanding and appreciation of the natural world, the sciences, and ourselves.” For more information about the Museum and how you can help, visit www.lvnhm.org.
