Mission Statement
The mission of the NDA is to improve the lives of diabetic children, their families and adults through prevention, education and services. Until there is a cure, we are here to help. The NDA is the only provider of diabetes education camps and free, monthly diabetes support groups in northern Nevada.
About This Cause
History: In 1997 the Nevada Children’s Diabetes Association (founded in 1996) and the Diabetic Educational center (founded in 1980) merged to become the Nevada Diabetes Association for Children and Adults. (NDA) The purpose of this merger was to ensure that vitally needed programs and services would be available throughout Nevada for people with diabetes. The NDA does not receive any government funding and is not part of any large national organization. 100% of funds raised benefit people with diabetes in our community. Demographics: Diabetes strikes people of all ages from all walks of life. More than 15,000 people are directly served by this organization in Northern Nevada, Hundreds of thousands more are reached nationally with review of the NDA website (60,000 hits/month), informational pamphlets, directories and booklets. Targeted “at risk” for diabetes populations include the elderly, overweight, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islanders, and African Americans. Due to the continued economic depression in Northern Nevada, the need for assistance with expensive diabetes medications and supplies has skyrocketed. Diabetics in need of nutritional and care education has continued to climb, as well. Volunteers Approximately 250 Medical personnel donate their time to NDA programs and 260 Special Events volunteers for a community total of 510.
