Mission Statement
Helping Hands of Vegas Valley is a non-profit whose mission is to improve the quality of life for senior citizens and their families in order to maintain their dignity and independence.
About This Cause
Established in 2000, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley (HHOVV) was created due to a lack of sufficient support for frail and low-income seniors in the Las Vegas Valley area. HHOVV's mission is to allow seniors to maintain their dignity and independence, while improving health and daily living. Our service population is seniors, age 60 and over, who reside in Las Vegas Valley with an income less than 150% of current federal poverty guidelines. The 2016 census estimates that 15.1% of Clark County's senior population are living below poverty level. HHOVV estimates there is over 55,500 seniors who may be in need of our services. We focus on 4 difficulties facing seniors which are access to sufficient food, transportation, dedicated in-home care and minor home repairs and maintenance. Over 3,000 seniors are served annually through the following programs: Senior Necessities and Food Pantry: More than 1,000 individuals receive approximately 40 pounds of groceries each month delivered by a team of dedicated volunteers. This enables some of Nevada's poorest seniors to rise above a state of food insecurity, while also giving them additional funds to spend on other essential costs. Transportation Program: Many seniors do not have access to transportation and are unable to run errands or attend medical appointments, which impact their health and creates an intense feeling of isolation. With wheelchair capable multi-passenger vehicles and a team of volunteers who drive their own cars, HHOVV is able to provide transportation for low income seniors and accommodate individuals with mobility issues. Respite Care Program: This program provides vouchers to resident caregivers of seniors who are in need of constant in-home care. The voucher of up to $1000 allows the caregiver to employ someone temporarily or place their loved one in a skilled facility for a short time, giving them a needed respite from their responsibilities. This prevents early institutionalization and allows seniors to age in place. Minor Home Repair Program: This program helps senior citizens by providing free minor home repair service one time per fiscal year. The majority of these repairs are things that homeowners would usually take care of themselves, but can no longer do and cannot afford to pay someone to do for them. In addition we also change out air filters smoke alarm batteries and lightbulbs in the ceiling.
