Mission Statement

To bring the healing power of golf through fresh air, exercise, and friendship to any golf enthusiast suffering from debilitating injury or illness. Providing support to all who want to get back on the path – the golf path – to improved physical and mental well-being.

About This Cause

Recovery Shot is inspired by the real-life story of two men; one, a stroke victim who struggled for two years with conventional therapy; the other his great friend, who knew that there would be no better therapy than the game of golf. He promised to get his buddy back out on the course and play 18 holes within a year. It took two years, but the promise was fulfilled. Today, Dennis Leoni is back, shooting in the ’90s and playing in tournaments, all thanks to Robert Herschbach, his dedicated friend who selflessly committed himself to Dennis’ recovery and engaged his club and fellow golfers to give his pal his Recovery Shot. For that, Dennis and his family are forever grateful and humbled and want to give back by extending this opportunity to others everywhere. “I loved to play golf. In fact, I loved to play all kinds of sports. But after suffering two strokes, it was all gone. I spent almost seven weeks in the hospital, two of which were in ICU, and I could barely move. I felt helpless, hopeless, and unhappy. I had to relearn how to walk, how to talk, and how to do everything. I then got a chance to play golf. But once I was out on the course, it was terrible. I was holding everyone up and slowing the game down. I was embarrassed and wanted to quit. But all the players were so patient and supportive, that I decided to keep going. My strength, stamina, balance, and coordination all slowly improved, and maybe most importantly, my fire for competition – and for life – was reignited. All because of golf. It’s taken six years, but with the love and support of family, friends, and even total strangers, I am back in the game. It has even given me a new purpose – to share with others this same life-giving shot that I was given. Another shot. A Recovery Shot.” — Dennis Leoni Our vision is to help more Recovery golfers and their buddies by expanding the Recovery Shot program; growing our capacity to provide and support adaptive golf equipment and all manner of clinics to Recovery golfers; assisting in the field of medical research; and raising the overall awareness of the therapeutic benefits of golf. In golf, a recovery shot is a shot that gives you a chance to come back from a daunting hazard or obstacle and salvage your game. The same can be said for the Recovery Shot program. We’re dedicated to giving our Recovery golfers a shot to come back by pairing them and a buddy of their choice with participating courses to play once a week for six months at no cost to them. The pilot program is being conducted in Ventura County, CA with plans to expand into L.A. County in the near future. For those recuperating, just getting out on the course is the first step. Starting slow, maybe just riding around in the cart, or holding the flag can be the beginning of improved mental and physical well-being for many. Medical and practical evidence abounds that golf is powerfully good therapy. From the invigorating benefits of fresh air to the heart-warming camaraderie of fellow golfers to the restorative power of low-impact exercise, golf delivers an opportunity for happier healing. Importantly, golf improves the brain’s neuroplasticity, its ability to compensate for injury and disease, and to relearn brain functions that have been lost or compromised. Golf therapy is good stuff and there’s a very real need for it in Ventura and L.A. Counties. In Los Angeles County, there are 53 stroke centers and 34 dedicated heart centers which is a strong indicator that thousands of people are suffering debilitating health crises every year. The good news – most survive. The bad news – survivors and their families face life-changing physical and mental hurdles, financial hardship, and myriad other challenges. Innumerable survivors seek adaptive sports to help them come back or find a new normal. Uncountable numbers of these survivors are golfers. And yet… There are no adaptive golf programs in Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the country with over 10 million residents – and 140 public and private courses. Ventura County, where we’re conducting our pilot program, is in the same boat. No adaptive golf programs. It’s hard to believe but true. Someone needs to get the ball rolling.
