CLIMATE RESILIENT COMMUNITIES

PALO ALTO, California, 94303-4326 United States

Mission Statement

Climate Resilient Communities (CRC) is a community-based organization dedicated to empowering under-resourced community voices to implement climate solutions that bring about justice, unity, and resilience.

About This Cause

Recognizing that in the Bay Area, as throughout the world, under-resourced communities are disproportionately vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, we work to support the frontline communities of East Palo Alto, North Fair Oaks, Redwood City, and Belle Haven through community action and engagement. Climate change, as it manifests in more frequent and intense weather events, exacerbates this compounded inequity, and flooding quite literally is an environmental hazard that erodes quality of life at the margins of our communities. Since 2016, Climate Resilient Communities (CRC) has been on the ground, learning the specific needs of residents in diverse, under-resourced communities in East Palo Alto (EPA), Belle Haven (Menlo Park) and North Fair Oaks. CRC’s outreach cultivates environmental awareness while giving local residents a voice in proactive resilience planning and adaptation. By building stronger alliances between residents, schools, local government programs and community-based organizations, CRC creates resilience against climate and socioeconomic-related stresses such as sea-level rise, extreme heat events, wildfire smoke, and economic instability. CRC partners with community based organizations to meet community-identified needs, through programs that advance youth education and leadership development, assist local residents in accessing home energy audits, weatherization, and subsidized solar panels, as well as other minor and critical home improvement projects. CRC’s work is guided by community leaders, such as through the Climate Change Community Team in EPA and North Fair Oaks Climate Ready Team. Our work continues to build community resilience through education, action-oriented projects, facilitating collaboration, and partnership with organizations. We emphasize community-based approaches to organizing and advocacy in relation to environmental justice. Through education and advocacy, CRC engages community members to encourage community action around climate change in the hopes of building resilience in the face of widespread changes and disasters, many of which will disproportionately affect those who CRC engages with.
