Mission Statement
Nate’s Place, A Wellness and Recovery Center, is a startup, 501c3 nonprofit organization in Oxnard, CA. Our mission is to deliver targeted, evidence-based, recovery model healthcare programs to address the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and mental health needs of low-to-middle income teens and young adults, ages 13-25, in Ventura County. Our outpatient services help participants attain and maintain sobriety and stable mental/emotional health in a safe setting. We founded Nate's Place in memory of Nate Rhoades, who sadly passed away at the age of 21 after a car accident on January 20, 2022. The Center is a tribute to the peer support and mentorship that Nate provided to those in need and honors the proven substance use/mental health recovery model that he bravely accomplished in his early teenage years.
About This Cause
In Ventura County, there is a significant gap in services to treat SUD and mental health conditions for youth and young adults, particularly aftercare services. Most services are inaccessible to low-and-middle-income individuals and families and are generally limited to for-profit, residential, and intensive outpatient treatment and therapy. Uninsured individuals and individuals with MediCal cannot pay the high costs of aftercare services. Other variables, such as transportation, are barriers to care. Additionally, for teens and young adults specifically, once they have received residential or intensive outpatient treatment, they return to their communities without comprehensive aftercare support, to help them maintain their sobriety and mental health. As a result, the risk for relapse as a teen and young adult is very high. According to our needs assessment of services provided in Ventura County, most of the treatment centers primarily serve adults and require private payment and insurance other than MediCal. We have found that there are no comprehensive aftercare programs in Ventura County that provide low-income teens and young adults with ongoing peer recovery coaching, a sense of community, and alternative replacement activities that will reduce the risk for relapse and maintain mental health stability. Nate’s Place, A Wellness and Recovery Center, was created to fill these dire gaps in our healthcare system in Ventura County. At Nate’s Place, our three key programs, (1) Counseling and Treatment, (2) Peer Support Recovery Coaching, and (3) Lifestyle Enrichment Activities, provide whole-person wellness and recovery services. In order for young individuals to attain and sustain wellness and healing, Nate’s Place integrates social and lifestyle healthcare into traditional clinical treatment. Following is a summary of our programs and services: Counseling and Medical Treatment: Nate’s Place, an outpatient agency, utilizes evidence-based practices with licensed clinical therapists to identify and address mental health conditions and SUD. We are committed to early illness and addiction detection and intervention, which prevents misuse from escalating in severity. Each participant will receive an initial assessment/intake from a qualified therapist to assess their needs, safety/risk factors and their history. Additionally, we provide counseling for clients who have already participated in residential treatment and need aftercare services. Ventura County Medical Center’s Addiction Clinic is one of our partnering agencies, and will be providing biweekly medical exams and medication assistance to those participants who are in need. Peer Support Recovery Coaching: Nate’s Place connects each participant to a Peer Support Recovery Coach who has been successful in their own recovery process. Coaching plays a crucial role in recovery for participants because it provides a relationship with respect, mutual understanding, accountability, and empowerment. Coaches extend treatment into the everyday environment of a participant, a dynamic that has been proven to reduce relapse. Mounting research shows that the benefits of Peer Support Recovery Coaching include: significant decreases in criminal justice involvement, emergency service utilization, hospitalization, and substance use; and improvement in access to social support, relationships with treatment providers, and treatment retention and satisfaction. Lifestyle Enrichment Activities: Nate’s Place provides participants with healthy replacement fitness and holistic activities to help them live a healthy and fulfilled life, free of substances. Our fitness programs include: weight lifting, boxing, ping pong, pool, rocking climbing, hiking nearby paths, and kayaking excursions. Our holistic activities include music, such as guitar and drumming lessons, art therapy; and meditation and yoga classes. Exercise reduces barriers to recovery as activity and movement can decrease boredom, poor mental health, and high stress and increase stimulation and social support. Listening to music and playing instruments are linked to emotional awareness, healing, relaxation, and stress management. Art Therapy allows participants to express their thoughts and emotions in a non-verbal, creative exercise. Mindfulness training through yoga or meditation improves self-control, regulates emotions, and reduces stress - all critical characteristics of achieving and maintaining sobriety and mental health. Participants will benefit from our program through 1) Accessibility to consistent therapeutic and medical treatment, 2) Coaching, which will increase their motivation and provide them with role modeling and a sense of empowerment; and 3) Social support and involvement in hobbies and fitness activities that they can continue in the years to come. Our MediCal covered therapy and evidence-based treatment, evening and weekend hours, free transportation services for Oxnard Union and Nordhoff High Schools, and clubhouse space for creative and physical activities make our program innovative, accessible, and life-changing for our participants.
