Its mission is to assist individuals, communities and institutions achieve racial justice and unity in diversity. Our goal is to promote behavioral change that facilitates discourse, leading to collaborative and constructive relationships that reflect unity in diversity at the interpersonal, community and institutional levels.

About This Cause

Copper to Gold is led by a team who are passionate about advancing healthy and just interracial relationships. Our goal is to promote sustainable change through personal behavioral transformation. Copper to gold is a course born out of our diverse experience working with individuals, communities and institutions on anti-racism. This team is dedicated to building a greater understanding of the impact of unconscious behaviors in their interactions with racialized communities. Copper-to-Gold is a transformative personal capacity-building program based principally on the Bahá'í Writings and current research on racism. The course covers how to recognize the common and all too often "unintentional" racist comments and "superior" attitudes that perpetuate estrangement, undermine community-building efforts and the achievement of racial amity with people of African descent and other persons of color. After completing the course, participants will have a foundation for further growth and more effective engagement in promoting Race Amity and racial unity with a deeper understanding of how to navigate the diversity in the human family. The course is for those who are willing to sit in some discomfort from time to time as we explore how racism, “the most vital and challenging issue”, has seeped into the fibers of our individual, community, and institutional lives, and for those who have a willingness to make the changes in their heads, hearts, and actions. The course takes place in a closed group setting where intimacy and trust can be developed. White participants are accompanied by Blacks and/or other persons "of color" who may shed light on the consequences of racist attitudes and behaviors. The group setting is "safe" in that it is confidential and judgment-free. While not a confessional, participants voluntarily do share their experiences in order to build a deeper understanding of how racism has poisoned us all and to explore how to heal from the damage to ourselves and others. A page describing each week's topic is emailed to participants before the meeting. It typically includes quotations from the Bahá'í writings related to the week's topic. It is hoped, however, that participants will take responsibility for their own learning. That can entail reviewing the material beforehand, investigating a topic further, reflecting on insights gained in the session, applying those insights in one's own life and developing and implementing a personal course of action. Groups meet for 2 hours weekly, days and times TBD. Currently, we have groups meeting seven days a week. Days and times are based on facilitator availability and will be announced at the introductory meeting. The entire course runs for 16 weeks. The program closes to participants who miss the first two sessions where we cover foundational materials on this issue. Regular attendance is encouraged in order to receive the most from the program.
