Mission Statement
Informed by individuals impacted by the U.S. criminal justice system, Clearviction's mission is to provide tools and guidance to help people with criminal convictions in Washington clear (vacate) their records, granting them a second chance to enter society, free from the stigma of their past.
About This Cause
Clearviction was established in 2020 after the passing of the New Hope Act in 2019, quickly followed by the Blake Act in 2022, allowing individuals with certain convictions to vacate (clear) the charge, meaning they can say that they have never been convicted of that crime on applications that may impact their access to resources such as employment, housing, banking, and healthcare. Like so much of the legal system, the process to vacate is unclear and challenging to navigate. Clearviction's free online resources help clear up the challenge of determining whether or not the conviction in question is eligible to be cleared (vacated) and provide information on the next steps once eligibility is determined. In addition to our free, online eligibility tools we are looking forward to the launch of our new community outreach programs, partnerships, and work with organizations sharing our collaborative vision, goals, and values that will put these tools in front of the 1.22 million people with eligible convictions in Washington who can benefit from them.
