Mission Statement
Project Evident is dedicated to transforming the way evidence is built and used in the social and education sectors. Our mission is to empower practitioners—those closest to the work—by providing them with the tools, data, and support they need to create meaningful and equitable outcomes for the communities they serve. We strive to shift the focus of evidence-building away from traditional, external agendas and towards a model that centers the needs and voices of practitioners. We believe that when practitioners are equipped with actionable data and evidence, they can improve programs, strengthen community impact, and drive positive social change. By fostering a culture of equity and collaboration, Project Evident aims to build a new ecosystem where evidence is not only credible and timely but also accessible, actionable, and aligned with the needs of those it serves. At the heart of our work is the belief that evidence is a powerful tool for advancing social and racial justice. It has the potential to identify what works, highlight disparities, and guide decision-making toward more equitable outcomes. Our mission is to ensure that evidence is used to support and amplify the voices of underrepresented communities, enabling them to thrive and reach their full potential. We are committed to building an inclusive, practitioner-centric evidence ecosystem by working in partnership with nonprofit organizations, schools, districts, funders, policymakers, and researchers. Through this collaborative approach, we aim to shift power, priorities, and resources toward the next generation of evidence practices—practices that are grounded in equity, rooted in community, and focused on real-world impact.
About This Cause
Project Evident is transforming the way evidence is built and used in the social and education sectors. With a commitment to a practitioner-centric approach, Project Evident empowers nonprofits, school districts, public agencies, funders, and policymakers to create stronger, more equitable outcomes for communities. Founded in 2017, Project Evident is at the forefront of modernizing evidence practices by shifting the focus away from traditional, outside evaluator-driven research agendas to a model that places practitioners—the people closest to the work—at the center. This shift allows practitioners to define what evidence matters most to them and equips them with actionable data to improve their programs and services. Through partnerships and field-building initiatives, Project Evident works to create a new ecosystem of evidence-building practices. By engaging stakeholders across sectors, Project Evident fosters collaboration between practitioners, funders, policymakers, and communities to reshape how evidence is used, ensuring that it is not only practical but also equitable and actionable. Our Approach: Project Evident’s work revolves around three key principles: Putting Practitioners in the Driver’s Seat: Practitioners—such as nonprofit leaders, school district staff, and public agency employees—are directly responsible for serving communities. They possess the most valuable knowledge and experience and should be empowered to lead the evidence-building process. Project Evident helps practitioners create Strategic Evidence Plans grounded in their needs and realities, ensuring they have the tools and data required to improve outcomes. Connecting Evidence with Equity: Evidence is a powerful tool for advancing equity. It can uncover gaps, highlight what works, and identify which approaches are most effective for different communities. Project Evident believes that evidence-building practices should be grounded in equity, with principles of fairness, justice, and inclusion informing both the data collection process and the outcomes sought. By prioritizing equity in all aspects of their work, Project Evident ensures that evidence is used to drive positive change in underserved communities. Building an Equitable Evidence Ecosystem: Project Evident works from multiple angles to create lasting change. The organization combines direct consulting with field-building efforts to create a more equitable and practitioner-driven evidence ecosystem. Whether helping nonprofits build evidence frameworks or supporting funders in aligning resources to drive impact, Project Evident strives to put evidence-building practices into the hands of those who need them most—those closest to the work. What We Do: Consulting Partnerships: Project Evident partners directly with practitioners, funders, and policymakers to support evidence-building efforts at all stages. This includes helping nonprofits set and drive their own evidence agendas, assisting funders in supporting grantees to generate evidence, and working with policymakers to better integrate evidence into decision-making processes. Key Initiatives: Actionable Evidence: Project Evident promotes the use of evidence that is credible, timely, and practical. By strengthening data and evidence use in educational and social programs, Project Evident ensures that practitioners can access the information they need to make informed decisions and improve outcomes. AI for Equitable Outcomes: The organization also works to advance the safe and equitable use of AI in social and educational sectors. Through technical assistance and the development of tools and resources, Project Evident helps communities harness the potential of AI to drive equitable outcomes. Next Generation Evidence Campaign: This initiative aims to create a more equitable evidence ecosystem by embracing a continuous R&D approach and broadening the definitions of what counts as evidence. By connecting practitioners with researchers, funders, and policymakers, Project Evident is building a stronger, more inclusive evidence field. Case Studies: The Duke Endowment Summer Literacy Initiative: Project Evident helped close the summer reading gap for underserved students in rural North Carolina. Through evidence-based strategies, the initiative improved literacy rates and ensured that students did not lose progress during summer months. Improving Career Readiness in Baltimore City Schools: Project Evident worked with Baltimore City Public Schools to strengthen career readiness programs. This collaboration ensured that students gained valuable academic and career skills, improving their future opportunities and outcomes. Our Values: Practitioner-Focused: We are dedicated to centering the voices and needs of practitioners in everything we do. By listening to those on the ground, we ensure that evidence-building practices are both relevant and actionable for the communities they serve. Committed to Learning, Inclusion, and Transparency: We believe in continuous learning and open sharing of our insights. We strive for transparency, embracing feedback, and ensuring that our work upholds the principles of equity, dignity, and justice. Actionable Evidence: We focus on making evidence useful and timely, helping practitioners, funders, and policymakers act on data in a way that drives meaningful change. Smart, Warm, Approachable, and Productive: We approach our work with a balance of intellectual rigor and human compassion. We’re always open to new ideas, welcoming diverse perspectives, and ensuring that we remain productive and accountable to our goals. Join Us in Building a Better Evidence Ecosystem: Project Evident is on a mission to change the way evidence is built and used in social and education sectors.
