Mission Statement
501 c 3 Mission Statement for Old First Preservation and Community Foundation, Inc. The Old First Preservation and Community Foundation Inc. provides management, maintenance, restoration and preservation of the Old First Church building located at 729 Carroll Street, Brooklyn, New York. Old First Church, constructed between 1889-1891, is a historically and architecturally significant structure which has been entered in the National Register of Historic Places. It is frequently made available for public viewing and is a focal point of the local community, providing space for a variety of community and arts based organizations. In addition, the Foundation supports local not-for-profit community organizations, among which are performing arts and educational organizations, and assists the Church's activities in support of the community, including the Church's work to provide shelter for the homeless and food relief. The Foundation’s activities are not religious.
About This Cause
Mission and background: Old First Preservation and Community Foundation, Inc. operates exclusively to further charitable activities within the meaning of Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (referred to herein as the Code). The Old First Church building is historically and architecturally significant; it was built from 1889 to 1891 and has been entered in the National Register of Historic Places. The building is a Neo-Gothic structure, accented by dramatic stained-glass windows and a solid granite foundation. The spire is the tallest limestone steeple in Brooklyn – a landmark that can be seen for miles. The interior structure contains no wood or steel. The legendary George L. Morse, one of the borough's most respected and successful 19th-century architects, designed it. Although much of Morse's notable downtown work was razed in the 1930s, the Old First Church building remains a living monument to Morse's genius. The church seats nearly 700 people, and features an organ designed and built by the famed Roosevelt Brothers as well as an expansive mural of The Empty Tomb, measuring 14 feet by 21 feet, which was created by the Italian artist Virgilio Tojetti in 1891. Past and present activities: The foundation was incorporated on Aug. 9, 2022, and at this very early stage has been focused on formation and organization, planning and setting priorities. Planned activities: The foundation was incorporated with a dual purpose: First, the management, maintenance, restoration and preservation of the church building; second, supporting local not-for-profit community organizations (including performing arts and educational organizations) and mission work to shelter the homeless and provide food relief. The foundation estimates that one-half to three-quarters of the time spent by its officers and volunteers will be devoted to the building preservation, which will be funded from grants or other contributions from governmental and not-for-profit sources as well as individual donations. The Old First Church building is frequently made available for public viewing and is a focal point of the local community. It provides space for numerous community and arts-based organizations. This will only be able to continue to be possible if the building is properly restored and maintained.
