Mission Statement

“A Congolese child born today can expect to achieve only 37% of their potential, compared to what would have been possible if they had benefited from a full, quality schooling experience.” That same source indicates that “The quality of education is extremely poor. In terms of learning and achievement, the primary completion rate is only about 67 %, and an estimated 86% of 10-year-olds in DRC are in learning poverty, meaning they cannot read and understand a simple text.” - World Bank Our mission is to help alleviate that. Through our current school construction initiative, we are hoping to create an opportunity for the children of Mushaki, DRC to meet their potential and earn an education to help them gain admission in a secondary school in a larger and safer area within the DRC. We look forward to developing our future projects to benefit the lives of children in North and South Kivu Provinces with the help of all stakeholders.

About This Cause

The Kivu Project was founded in 2022 by Dan Torsiello and Jackie Jaramillo. What started as a small idea after Dan’s first trip to the DRC has now grown into a new non-profit organization. Dan is a high school world and African history teacher, varsity basketball coach, Rutgers alumnus, and a passionate traveler. Jackie works in digital media, is a Seton Hall alumnus, has a background in graphic design and loves to travel as well. Together, their fundraising efforts have snowballed into something beyond their dreams— a fully established NPO. In the US we are currently fundraising for the school build in Mushaki, DRC. We are coordinating with Christian Aganze of socially-conscious travel company Congo Local Guides. Based in Goma, Christian is the ideal partner to make long-lasting changes for good in an area that needs it most. He is our point of contact in DRC and has been our lead with the build. As of October 2022 we have built a six classroom, six toilet, two office school with a rainwater collection and storage, solar power collection and storage, desks for every student and teacher, computers and printers for administrators, and two years of school supplies for every student at a cost of $42,000 USD. Not only have we built a school, but we’ve now started our own non-profit organization. As an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit we hope to spread awareness and have an effective change on those in need.
