Mission Statement
Shady Pines Radio is a 24/7 online community radio station. Our mission is to build up and energize the local arts culture, while amplifying local and underrepresented music and talent. We aim to bring people together remotely through the art of broadcast, and in person by hosting and supporting live events in our community. SPR provides an educational, hands-on broadcasting experience for our DJ’s, as well as a free and accessible platform for our community to express their creativity and be heard.
About This Cause
Shady Pines Radio’s online radio station broadcasts 24/7 on our free and accessible app, website, and all smart devices. Formed in 2020 to maintain connection within Portland’s creative community during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are now home to nearly 100 DJs in the Portland area, hosting eclectic and creative shows from their homes, featuring local and under-the-radar music, comedy, interviews, experimental sound, and more. We provide dedicated radio broadcasting training to DJs, to express their creativity and be heard. Shady Pines Radio also creates and promotes local live music and arts events, including Shady Pines Festival. Formed and directed by active members of Portland’s creative community, Shady Pines Radio has grown quickly, largely through word of mouth, radio programming, and live events. Although we focus on uplifting local Portland artists, our listenership has grown worldwide, with over 14,000 listeners tuned in monthly from 6 continents. In our local community, we have received tremendous feedback, nominated by readers of Willamette Week in its Best of Portland awards for Best Radio Station (voted #2 for the past 2 years) and for Best Music Festival. In September 2023, Shady Pines Radio was added to the Portland Music Mural, an artwork paying tribute to the music of Portland. Shady Pines Festival is our annual family-friendly music festival, celebrating the region’s vibrant arts scene. In 2023, over 600 community members came together for 3 full days of performances by 140 local and touring musicians, comedians, DJs, and poets, with activities such as yoga, kazoo parades, interactive art installations, an open mic, and more. The event was supported by a team of 239 volunteers, local arts and food vendors, staff, and sponsors. Our Board of Directors comprises 50% women. Industry-wide, only 11.72% of radio stations’ Program Directors/Brand Managers are women, according to Mentoring & Inspiring Women in Radio’s Annual Gender Analysis Study for 2022. Additionally, 5 of our 6 Board members are Portland metro residents, and 4 of our Board members are themselves independent performing musicians. Shady Pines Radio is also supported by a network of over 100 amazing DJs and locally embedded volunteers, including many excellent Black, Latinx, Asian, transgender, and non-binary DJs.
