Mission Statement
When The Bay Institute and Aquarium of the Bay joined forces years ago, a unique partnership was formed to protect, restore, and inspire conservation of San Francisco and its watershed. Our shared mission compels us to be at the forefront of environmental conservation and education. We are a voice for the rivers. We are champions for the Bay. We are leaders in environmental education. And we are continuously growing-affecting change where it is needed most.
About This Cause
Aquarium of the Bay, located on PIER 39 in San Francisco, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to educating visitors about the marine life of the San Francisco Bay and the conservation efforts necessary to preserve it. The aquarium is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, attracting nearly 600,000 visitors and runs education programs that reach close to 30,000 students who participate in a wide array of education programs. One of the primary goals of Aquarium of the Bay is to provide educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. The aquarium offers a variety of in-person and virtual education programs, including field trips, summer camps, and interactive exhibits that aim to teach visitors about the ecological importance of the San Francisco Bay and its inhabitants. Additionally, the aquarium’s team of marine biologists, educators, and environmental scientists regularly host workshops and presentations about relevant subjects such as marine conservation, animal highlights, biodiversity, sustainability, and more. The Aquarium of the Bay’s environmental conservation efforts are in the forefront of its mission. Some of the education programs conduct regular beach cleanups, the aquarium’s Sustainable Seafood Alliance engages in outreach programs to promote sustainable fishing practices and reduce the impact of plastic pollution, and the Bay Institute - the research, legislative, and advocacy arm of Aquarium of the Bay works to restore, advocate for, and protect critical habitats in the Bay. Recently, the Bay Institute has been steadfast in its commitment to restoring the flow of the San Joaquin River. Aquarium of the Bay is a dynamic and environmentally conscious organization that plays a critical role in promoting environmental education and conservation efforts in the San Francisco Bay area.
