About This Cause

The Danish Association was created in 1923 as a non-profit organization, based on the expressed need to provide a retirement home for elderly Danes in the Northwest. It also was a gathering place for families and groups for dinners, social events, folk dancing, and the facility even had a much used bowling alley. Residents moved in and stayed there for their remaining years, a tradition of caring for the elderly brought over from Denmark. They were not sent there to just live out their years, but instead were given the opportunity to share their traditions, stories, and lives with many families who came to participate in the sponsored activities. The Home was used in this way for many years until the building needed to be replaced. A new building replaced the original one with the programs and activities continuing. Gradually, as people lived longer and as people desired to stay in their own homes as long as possible, the usefulness of the Home diminished. It was sold and a building near Northgate was purchased in order to continue to carry out the programs begun so many years ago. The purpose also was to keep elders connected and living happily in their own homes, while enjoying various activities of many groups from young to old. The organization was renamed Northwest Danish Association to demonstrate that it is more inclusive of the activities and programs supported. The Association continues to provide programs and activities for all generations. The Eldercare program of the Association continues to provide the elderly with Lifeline Medical Alert Systems, walkers, and wheelchairs, as well as social programs, luncheons, and opportunities to connect with their Danish traditions and language. The Association also works with students by providing language help and support, as well as scholarship programs for students who are in need of financial aid to help fund their college educations. Every year the Association also sponsors educational and Danish-themed camps for children. Northwest Danish Association has created programs that advocate for cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding, notions that have become central in today’s globalizing world. The Association enriches community life while serving those in need of our programs across all ages, including children, students, and elderly. The mission has become broader, in that it is not only to preserve, but also to share Danish culture, traditions, and values with others.
