About This Cause

Tacoma Day was founded in 1911. The mission was than and is now to offer quality affordable care and education to assist parents who work and or go to school. Approximately 80% of our children qualify for free or reduced meals. Over 70% of our families are single parent female head of household. Additionally we work with homeless families, children with disabilities, children in the foster care system and children whose families are involved with CPS. Tacoma Day's program for success is: 1. A developmentally appropriate program based on standards developed by the National Association of Young Children and Head Start of America. We have maintained this mark of quality since 1989. Tacoma Day requires that staff have educational background in early childhood education or a related field at college level. We believe that education is a life long journey for everyone. Education is encouraged as well as monthly college level training sessions are provided. Tacoma Day is actively involved with the State of Washington's quality rating system This system defines school readiness using the latest research and monitors our program with tools developed by leading experts. 2. Program development is based on an assessment process that is ongoing and center wide. This assessment system surveys our Board of Trustees, families and staff . Tacoma does an assessment on each child that is done three times each school year so we can monitor progress and create program for tailored for each child. Tacoma Day is also able to identify children for additional services as needed. We collaborate with outside agencies and the public schools for early intervention. 3. Tacoma Day partners with families. Tacoma Day recognizes that parents are the first teachers of their children. Resources, goal setting, support are all important in the process of strengthening our families and ultimately our community. With strong families we secure our future. To continue our work of providing a safe nurturing environment it is essential that we utilize as many resources as possible. Tacoma Day has been able to serve the community for over 100 years through the generosity of grants, foundations, contributions, and programs such as the USDA Child/Adult Care Food Program and Washington State ECEAP/Head Start. These sources have helped to defray the cost of our program so that we can open our doors to all families.
