About This Cause

Mission Statement: We are a Eucharistic community called to evangelize in the world as Christ’s disciples and formed according to the charisms of St. Dominic. We are consecrated to praising God in Divine Liturgy, blessing our neighbors in Jesus’ name and proclaiming the truth of the Gospel in love. In 1908, Bishop Edward J. O’Dea and Fr. Lawrence McMahon, O.P., had a vision to establish a Dominican presence in the Northwest to serve the students of the University of Washington and the surrounding community. Catholic men and women transformed that vision into Blessed Sacrament Parish. With brick and mortar, they built our “city on a hill” (Mt 5:14) to realize the mission of the Order of Preachers: To Praise, To Bless, To Preach. We worship together, we bless one another, and formed in the faith, we preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The vision, the legacy, and the work continue. Blessed Sacrament provides a place of worship for Catholics throughout the Northwest, being Seattle's only Dominican parish. Additionally ,Blessed Sacrament is significantly involved in care for the homeless and indigent. Our St. Vincent de Paul conference, founded in 1921, is one of the oldest and most active in the Seattle area. Close to 100 people volunteer regularly in one or more of the charitable activities sponsored by our parish St. Vincent de Paul Conference and our Blessed Sacrament Food Program. We welcome new volunteers! Join us in providing services, counsel, food, and hot meals to our neighbors in need. The church was registered as a Seattle landmark in 1981 and a national landmark in 1984. Blessed Sacrament Church was seriously damaged in the Nisqually earthquake of February 28, 2001. Once the damage was secured, restoration of the church building began in earnest. Workers undertook the daunting task of masonry repairs to the exterior brickwork and window casings, roof repairs, as well as interior sand-blasting of the painted brick walls. The restoration of the building envelope to repair damaged stained and faceted glass windows, their mullions and tracery was completed in 2019. Our next major project is to install a historic 1946 Aeolian-Skinner Organ. The Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1071 was built under the direction of master builder, G Donald Harrison. We acquired this fine pipe organ to support worship as well as a wide ranging community music program. The installation will require re-enforcing our choir loft to support the weight of the organ and electrical modifications to allow for the organs blower. The instrument's internal structure will need to be modified for our physical requirements, a new blower purchased and replacement of the leather components of the most vulnerable parts of the wind system.
