Mission Statement
SAM connects art to life. Through art, the Seattle Art Museum fosters creativity and builds community. As a leading visual art institution in three unique locations, SAM shares its global collections, powerful exhibitions, and dynamic programs to engage, educate, and inspire.
About This Cause
Through the transformative power of art, SAM ignites creativity, builds connections, and strengthens community. Across three unique locations, we share global collections, groundbreaking exhibitions, and dynamic programs that engage, educate, and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds. Our Vision is to be the museum for all of Seattle—a bold, inclusive, and ever-evolving hub of creativity, connection, and cultural leadership, shaping the future of art and community together. We are led by the values of belonging, joy, curiosity, generosity, integrity, and innovation. In a typical year, SAM serves 800,000 visitors at our three distinct locations—our downtown museum, the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park, and our always-free Olympic Sculpture Park along the downtown waterfront, and present major special exhibitions and dozens of rotating shows. To reduce financial barriers, SAM offers monthly free admission days, free passes through the Seattle Public Library system, and our Community Pass Program with partner organizations who support historically underserved communities. Free public and education programs offered throughout the year include docent-led tours, talks and lectures, Family Festivals, Summer at SAM, Teen Night Out, Free First Thursdays (with hours extended to 8 pm at our downtown location), and educator professional development workshops. All public schools receive free tours with teaching artist-led workshops, and Title I schools receive bus subsidies. Many school materials are offered in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. SAM was founded in 1933 when the museum’s first director, Dr. Richard Fuller, donated his collection of Japanese and Chinese art to form the basis of the Seattle Art Museum, which was located in Seattle’s Volunteer Park. Today, SAM’s collection has grown to over 25,000 works from around the world, including Australian Aboriginal, African, Asian, Native American, and Modern and Contemporary art. The collection spans centuries, from 6,000 B.C.E to newly commissioned artworks, bringing together ancient and modern cultures in conversation.
