Mission Statement
Uniting Skagit County to build a positive and sustainable quality of life.
About This Cause
United Way of Skagit County is committed to improving the common good. Our Key Influence Sectors are targeted to support and increase stability of the underpinnings of a healthy and prosperous Skagit County. Through Early Learning (KIS for Education) there is compelling evidence that strong investments in the early years, prenatally through 3rd grade, have significant implications for ensuring all students graduate from school with the skills, knowledge and behaviors needed for any and all career and college pathways. In support of this, UWSC is contracting to provide an Early Learning Coordinator for the county in coordination with the Children's Council of Skagit County. The Early Learning Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership, coordinating project deliverables for services, birth through age 8, with identified community partners, assist with developing and evaluating program outcomes, provide professional development, mentoring, and technical assistance for early learning partners and county-level specialists. Through Financial Empowerment and Financial Self-Sufficiency (KIS for Income), evidence reveals that we learn more from education if it is experiential and relevant to our lives. This is why UWSC is contracted with a consultant to provide a Financial Empowerment Peer-to-Peer program. Peer led financial education sessions will be held with groups of low to moderate income (LMI) individuals/families throughout Skagit County. Graduates will receive a Bank-on type certificate upon completion of the series. Peer leaders will guide peers on accessing community resources, serving as critical liaisons to financial institutions and other organizations providing financial education. Studies show that pairing financial education with other services, such as access to checking or savings accounts may yield greater results in terms of behavior change. These are but two of the ways UWSC is dedicated to improving the common good in Skagit County. In addition to the above mentioned efforts, UWSC encourages youth to get involved in their community through our Youth United program, which provides a varsity letter to those who complete 100 hours of volunteerism. We provide substantial financial support to create and maintain a website disseminating Skagit County community indicators in coordination with Skagit County Health Department. This website will provide critical information for nonprofit organizations, schools and public agencies while giving individuals easy to understand one-stop information about local trends and statistics. UWSC works collectively with and belongs to many local coalitions in order to achieve greater impact.
