Mission Statement

Making a difference in community.

About This Cause

MISSION “To develop and manage innovative programs that promote self-sufficiency and remove individuals and families from poverty” has been the mission of MDC since our founding in 1964. VISION Creating vibrant communities VALUES Excellence: We are passionate about delivering the highest quality service and responding to the needs of the community. Integrity: We are recognized as stewards of community resources and demonstrate ethical, honest and trustworthy behavior in all our actions. Human Potential: We value the hope and promise of every individual and believe in their ability to succeed. Inclusion: We value diversity and individuals working together. MDC is a vital community resource for Tacoma and Pierce County. Founded in 1964 as a non-profit Community Action Agency, MDC provides innovative programs that help remove people from a life of poverty and prepare them for self-sufficient living. For most of our more than 50 year history, MDC has responded to community needs by providing services that address the needs of low-income families. We have introduced national model programs such as “Housing First,” “Healthcare for the Homeless,” “College Bound,” and the “Educational Opportunity Center,” which, in turn, have improved lives and given hope to thousands of residents. Known by many names in the early years (e.g. Tacoma Pierce County Opportunity and Development, Inc.), our legal name is Metropolitan Development Council. We are currently doing business as MDC. MDC provides services through four core service areas: Housing, Healthcare, Education and Employment. MDC is a strategic partner with the schools, local hospitals, cultural venues, colleges and universities, non-profits, and local governments. Today we reach out to our full community—foundations, businesses, organizations, and individuals—to help us diversify our base of support so we can continue to provide critical services to our community. Difficult economic times now threaten Tacoma’s communities and call us all to work together if we are to sustain what has been accomplished and continue to grow. MDC is responding to this challenge with new board and staff leadership, investment in staff training and development, a leaner management structure, greater volunteer involvement and a commitment to continuous process improvement within our organization, as well as each of our 40 programs. P. Mark Pereboom became the agency’s second CEO in 2010, following the retirement of Lindsey Hinand after more than 45 years of service.
