Mission Statement

Community Montessori is a unique educational environment for children from twelve months through eighth grade.

About This Cause

Community Montessori is a unique educational environment for children from twelve months through eighth grade. Practices and policies are based on our staff’s combined educations, life experiences, and decades of working with children. We want every child to develop to his or her full potential, especially intellectually. We value independence, self-confidence, intrinsic motivation, and self-discipline. We work to minimize narcissistic tendencies. Children enrolled in Community Montessori learn to concentrate; to make good choices; to be reality oriented; and to love learning, order, and quiet. Children have freedom to move about the classroom, choosing “work” from the different areas. Children progress at an individual rate. Children have a need for freedom, but within established boundaries, structure, and rules. No adult activity is more important than respect for the child’s concentrated work experience or interaction with other children. There is no circle time. Everything we do ideally goes at the pace of the children. This may take longer, be less efficient, and often less thorough than when adults do things, but it is essential for children. Community Montessori’s learning goals are similar to those used by Washington State prior to the adoption of Common Core State Standards with a greater emphasis on mathematics, logic, and science: There are no tests or test preparation and no timed exercises, ever. Common Core Standards will not be used. Students learn and apply the core principles of mathematics. Students learn and use concepts and principles of physical and life sciences and the process of experimentation which fosters the ability to think logically, analytically, and critically. Students read for pleasure and to learn utilizing printed material. Students write effectively, efficiently, and concisely. Students learn, not just facts, but the importance of history, geography, and culture and the impact of each on the world today. Students demonstrate the democratic process and participate in self governance. Students appreciate and express themselves through the arts. Health and fitness is demonstrated in food, recreation, and life-style choices. Students integrate experience and knowledge to make decisions and solve problems. Students demonstrate a good work ethic, perseverance, tenacity, and common sense.
