Mission Statement
Chief Seattle Club is a day center for homeless and low-income American Indians/Alaskan Natives in Seattle. The Club’s 2,352 members are 100% American Indian/Alaskan Native descent, 100% low-income, 49% homeless and 42% female. The Club’s members are from 203 different tribes in the United States and Canada. Approximately 75% of our members have mental health and substance abuse issues. We aim to help our members stabilize their lives by providing food, basic needs, mental health, access to government benefits, housing assistance, legal assistance, substance abuse treatment and cultural, art and spiritual activities.
About This Cause
Our goal is to reduce American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) homelessness and stabilize low-income AI/ANs. Every day, 100 members come to Chief Seattle Club for basic needs such as hot meals, showers and laundry services. Basic needs act as a gateway for homeless/low-income AI/ANs, often considered a "hard-to-reach" population by mainstream agencies. Our partners locate services at the Club because they recognize the unique access we provide their agencies to our members. The Club works with a broad range of non-profit and government partners such as Washington State DSHS, Seattle Indian Health Board, Harborview Medical Center, Evergreen Treatment Services, Northwest Indian Bar Association, St. Vincent de Paul, Seattle Community Law Center and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Club gains the trust of members and offers a wide range of coordinated on-site services, including health care, mental health, access to government benefits, legal aid, housing assistance, job training, substance abuse intake and referral, and cultural, art and spiritual activities. In 2018, the Club served 1,455 unduplicated members through 78,342 meals; 8,671 showers and laundry services; 491 health treatments; housing assistance to 695 households; and assistance obtaining birth certificates, state/ tribal ID cards and bus passes for 546 members.
