Mission Statement

"The first Americans helping ALL Americans"

About This Cause

For over 60 years the Seattle Indian Center has supported American Indians/Alaska Natives, and people of all ethnicities, for the betterment of our Puget Sound community. The Seattle Indian Center is a long-standing and vibrant community services organization serving the Seattle metropolitan area. We were established in 1958 and held 501(C)3 status since 1972 with the mission to provide programs and assistance to disadvantaged individuals. We happily serve people of all ethnicities, but focus on providing culturally relevant services that meet the unique needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Over the years, our list of programs has changed to meet present needs and to address current challenges, but our commitment to serving our community has never wavered! Throughout our tenure, our programs have ranged from culturally appropriate adoption advocacy to Second Chance employment programs for formerly incarcerated American Indians and Alaska Natives. We have had great success in our implementation of programs. For example, after the positive results of our Second Chance program we were able to expand this service through the City of Seattle to serve all. Located in Seattle's International District, our clients represent the diversity that Seattle has to offer. Daily, we are available for Seattle's poorest and most vulnerable. In 2020 we served over 29,000 unique individuals and provided over 130,000 total units of service across all our program departments. In 2014, we were displaced from our Forever Home at the Leschi Center, the space we'd occupied since 1988. We moved into a space 1/3 the size of the Leschi Center. The space in the Rainier Center that we presently operate out of does not meet our needs. We currently do not have enough space for the clients we serve. Our Day Center is frequently filled to capacity with every seat taken. Additional case management office space is needed to increase client privacy. Right now, we are using literally every square inch of our space, 24 hours a day. We are working hard to find a new Forever Home for our vital services. In addition to searching for a better building, there are several programs we need implemented to help our clients improve their circumstances. The housing crisis in Seattle has profoundly affected victims of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and other forms of violence. Each week people come to us in need of immediate short term housing. Our current facility makes it a challenge for us to provide this, but we persevere knowing a shelter is imperative for victims to escape abuse. We at the Seattle Indian Center believe in a holistic approach to case management. The Seattle Indian Center has experience successfully implementing employment and education programs for our clients. Through the decades, we have seen people lift themselves out of extreme poverty through opportunities for training and work. The development and expansion of employment and education programs is a top priority for the Seattle Indian Center in 2021.
