About This Cause
Special Olympics Washington has been working to effect change in the community since 1975, creating a space where individuals, regardless of their abilities, can lead healthy lifestyles and be valued members. We offer year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), providing them opportunities to develop their physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and share their gifts, skills and friendship with their families, fellow athletes and the community. Individuals with IDD encounter significant challenges, including societal and environmental hurdles, as well as educational negligence. Children and adults living with IDD throughout the state encounter discrimination, isolation, misunderstandings, and poverty. The lack of adequate care, insufficient nutrition, and sedentary lifestyles contribute to chronic health issues experienced by people with IDD. This situation is further exacerbated by the lack of accessible ongoing sports/recreation programs that stress fitness, skill development and quality coaching and competition. Regardless of social, financial or other demographic barriers, every individual deserves and requires the chance to be physically active. Special Olympics Washington unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sport every day. Through programming in sports, health, education and community building, Special Olympics Washington positively impacts the lives of people with IDD and raises awareness about their talents and abilities – as well as the injustices, isolation, intolerance and inactivity they face.
