Mission Statement

Bloodworks Northwest (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) is a community-based nonprofit organization. Our mission is saving lives through research, innovation, education, and excellence in blood, medical, and laboratory services in partnership with our community. Each year we help save hundreds of thousands of lives through: medical research, blood banking, transfusion expertise, bleeding disorders patient care, umbilical cord blood and bone marrow banking, and organ transplant testing. Your gift will help save lives now and help create a better future for generations to come, by funding research to find tomorrow’s therapies and cures.

About This Cause

Since 1944, Bloodworks Northwest helps meet the healthcare needs of the community through a variety of programs, which include: • Blood Banking – Recruiting and maintaining volunteer blood donors; collecting, testing, processing, and distributing more than 1,000 units of blood per day for patients in over 90 hospitals, cancer treatment centers and clinics throughout the Pacific Northwest. Anyone could need a blood transfusion – a mother in childbirth, a burn victim, an individual with sickle cell disease or hemophilia, a cancer patient, or someone needing heart surgery or an organ transplant. • Research Institute - Our staff of 70 scientists study blood safety and storage, thrombosis (the cause of heart attacks and strokes), and clotting disorders, as well as treatments to improve the lives of people with bleeding disorders, those who need transfusions or bone marrow matches, and others. • Transfusion Medicine - In order to support the best care possible for patients, our hematologists with transfusion expertise are available to doctors and hospitals around the country through our 24-hour, toll-free, nationwide hotline. Each month, we receive more than 300 calls from surgeons and physicians who are treating a patient with a bleeding emergency or transfusion complication. • Bone Marrow – Recruiting people to join the National Marrow Donor Program’s (NMDP) Be The Match™ registry to increase the likelihood that the thousands of people with life-threatening diseases like leukemia who are waiting for bone marrow or stem cell transplants find their lifesaving match. We also coordinate the donation process when people in our region have been matched to a patient somewhere in the world – including testing, arranging for stem cell collection, recording medical history and coordinating exams and follow-up. • Hemophilia Treatment Center – Providing clinical support to 1,000 individuals with bleeding disorders and their families throughout Washington State. • Umbilical Cord Blood – Recruiting, collecting, and storing umbilical cord blood from volunteer donors and registering those units with the NMDP, where they are available for transplant patients around the world. Cord blood is an increasingly used alternative to bone marrow for patients with a variety of disorders, especially for children. • Organ Transplant Testing - BloodworksNW is a vital partner with organ transplant centers and with organizations that work with organ donor families to find the very best match between donated organ and patient. Transplantation of hearts, livers, kidneys and other organs all depend on the laboratory experts at BloodworksNW.
