Mission Statement

We remove barriers to opportunities so immigrant and refugee communities can flourish without compromising values, heritage or ethnicity.

About This Cause

Kandelia, previously known as VFA, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization, provides direct programs, connections to community resources, and tools to address systemic inequities so immigrant and refugee families and communities can thrive without having to compromise values, heritage or ethnicity. Leveraging our convener model and years of experience rooted in the Vietnamese community, we meet people where they are with programs that are culturally responsive and holistically enriching. Our programs are based at Seattle World School, one of only a few public schools in the country designed for newly arrived refugee and immigrant youth. Our demographics include: - 30+different languages are spoken; the largest are Spanish (31%), Vietnamese (12%), Maya-Quiche (11%), Tigrinya (8%) and Amharic (5%) - 93% qualify for free or reduced lunch, an indicator of economic need - 97% are people of color - 98% are English language learners - 100% are recently-arrived refugee and immigrants - The majority of families have youth between the ages of 11 and 21
