Mission Statement

Bringing Seattle/King County's transit history to life. We restore, operate and maintain King County's historic bus fleet to promote awareness of public transit.

About This Cause

Metro Employees Historic Vehicle Association (MEHVA) was incorporated in 1982 to preserve, restore, and operate historically significant public transit vehicles and educate the citizens of Seattle/King County area on the importance of public transit past and present. MEHVA is an all-volunteer organization. MEHVA membership is open to all present and retired Metro Transit employees and employees of any predecessor transit system that operated in Seattle/King County. Associate membership is open to all. The Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle (Metro) set up an historic fleet by Resolution in 1984. This fleet would consist of significant transit vehicles that had operated in the Seattle/King County area. These vehicles would be owned by Metro and stored on Metro property. The Resolution also recognized MEHVA and entered into an agreement whereby MEHVA could operate and maintain these vehicles. When King County merged with Metro in the mid-90s, this agreement was included in a County Ordinance, which was then incorporated into county code. MEHVA's educational function is carried out by operating trips open to the public, participating in parades, displaying buses at vehicles shows, and providing buses to King County Metro Transit for special occasions. in order to support these activities MEHVA members perform preventative and corrective maintenance on the motor buses and electric trolley coaches in the historic fleet, locate obsolete bus parts, locate additional locally-significant buses to add to the historic fleet, distribute by mail and email a schedule of public trips, and hold member meetings and work parties. MEHVA generates funds to pay for bus maintenance and publicity by charging a modest fare for the (normally) seven public trips it operates during the year, by renting buses for movies and special events (not allowed since 2008 due to a change in federal regulations), by member dues, by donations, and by the interest paid on its credit union accounts.
