Mission Statement
Our Mission: To foster a creative, inclusive art‐making community, providing access to quality education and professionally equipped studios for everyone. We promote the joy and transformative power of art and actively support the development of visual artists.
About This Cause
Our Purpose We aspire to extend the visual arts experience to people from all backgrounds by creating opportunities for everyone to learn, make, and experience the visual arts through equal access to our free and subsidized classes, low-cost studio access program, and free exhibitions, lectures, and events. Within an extraordinary community of artists, students and patrons, Pratt strives to be a conduit for artistic development, providing pathways to knowledge, support, and inspiration, and changing the way individuals see themselves and the world around them. Our Background Pratt was founded in 1976 to provide high-quality visual arts training in Seattle’s Central District, one of the city’s most economically- and ethnically-diverse neighborhoods. Originally part of the Parks Department, Pratt gained non-profit status in 1983. Pratt serves as a lasting tribute to Edwin T. Pratt, the Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League assassinated in 1969, a man who devoted himself to improving the quality of life of others. From humble beginnings with only a few classes, Pratt is flourishing with over 3,600 youth and adults participating in our more than 500 free and subsidized glass, sculpture, wood, jewelry, and printmaking classes, giving many individuals their first exposure to making art and teaching aspiring, emerging and established artists new techniques and skills. Through our unique Studio Rental Program, Pratt provides emerging and seasoned artists with opportunities to hone technical skills and produce art. More than 20,000 members of the public are exposed to the work of contemporary visual artists through the more than 40 exhibitions, lectures, and demos we present each year. Throughout our history, Pratt has brought the arts to life for countless residents, empowering these individuals by providing access to the education and tools necessary to explore creative ideas, nurture their internal voice, and actively participate in their community. Pratt serves as a year-round creative hub for working artists, arts patrons, and community members to exchange ideas and learn new skills, contributing vibrancy to the quality of life in Seattle. Primary Activities: Adult Classes & Workshops Pratt offers over 500 subsidized classes & workshops each year in glass arts, sculpture, jewelry/metalsmithing, printmaking, painting, drawing, woodworking, stonecarving and mixed media for adults at all skill levels. Youth & Teen Program Pratt provides free and low-cost opportunities for K-12 students to explore creativity and build progressive skills to succeed in school and life. Priority registration in our free classes is reserved for students in the Central Area and surrounding underserved neighborhoods. Studio Access Program Over 300 working artists access affordable, professionally-equipped studio space to hone skills and produce art each year. Lectures, Exhibitions & Events More than 20,000 people access the visual arts annually through our free public artist lectures, exhibitions and demonstrations. Master Artist Program Pratt’s Master Artist Program brings innovative and highly skilled artists from around the world to teach in Pratt’s studios. These stimulating 3 – 5 day intensives provide emerging and established artists with the rare opportunity to learn cutting-edge techniques, explore new directions, exchange ideas and collaborate with one another. Artist-in-Residence Program Our Artist-in-Residence Program supports month-long residencies for artists to develop new work and explore new techniques and materials in Pratt’s studios with tailored one-on-one instruction and project support. Travel Abroad Program Pratt designs unique cultural exchange opportunities for students at all skill levels. Recent workshops include Printmaking in Oaxaca, Mexico (2014, 2013); Book Arts in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (2011); and Glass Arts in Kamenický Šenov, Czech Republic (2009). Past programs have resulted in international exhibits featuring Pratt students and host country artists. Scholarships & Tuition Assistance Each year, Pratt offers an array of merit- and need-based scholarships in each visual arts discipline taught in our studios. In addition, our year-round Tuition Assistance Program covers up to 75% of course fees for individuals demonstrating interest and financial need. Pratt Points Volunteer Program Pratt’s volunteer program offers opportunities for individuals who volunteer in our studios and administrative offices to earn rewards points that can be redeemed for class registration and studio rental time.
