Mission Statement

To protect and enhance the waters of Puget Sound for the health and restoration of our aquatic ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

About This Cause

Soundkeeper works to meaningfully decrease pollutants reaching the Sound through active monitoring, citizen enforcement, policy regulation and pollution prevention activities. At the same time Soundkeeper increases civic engagement in Puget Sound water quality issues by engaging with diverse communities to increase awareness of the need to protect local waterways, by building a strong community voice to advocate for the Sound and by fostering active participation in saving Puget Sound. Soundkeeper has a strategic focus on reducing the impacts of polluted stormwater runoff, which is the single-largest source of toxic pollution in the Sound. In addition, Soundkeeper works to reduce the impacts of industrial and municipal wastewater, agricultural pollution and fossil fuels. Soundkeeper monitors Puget Sound water quality by boat and land, enforces the Clean Water Act, involves volunteers in waterway cleanups, engages with policy makers, stakeholders and regulators to improve water quality protections, and educates the public about local and regional pollution issues. Since its inception, Soundkeeper has also focused on business assistance, pollution prevention education and community involvement. A founding member of the EnviroStars Cooperative, Soundkeeper founded and currently manages the award-winning Clean Marina Washington program which has now certified 73 marinas statewide. Soundkeeper's other work has focused on marine debris cleanups, developing a Puget Sound water quality mapping system and engaging the public in watershed education. As a founding member of Waterkeeper Alliance, Puget Soundkeeper helped grow similar efforts around the country into an international model of watershed-based protection and advocacy for over 300 independent programs on six continents. Soundkeeper works throughout the Puget Sound Basin, but concentrates much of its work in the heavily populated areas of King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties where pollution is the most concentrated. Directly or indirectly however, Soundkeeper's work benefits the entire population of Puget Sound - approximately 4.4 million people.
