Our Mission is to: Make known the gifts of people who have intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships; Foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members while being faithful to the core values of our founding story; and Engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.
About This Cause
People with intellectual disabilities are among the most vulnerable in our country. According to a recent U.S. Senate report, people with disabilities are more likely to be poor than any other demographic in the nation. The majority experience extreme social isolation and ongoing humiliation. L’Arche exists to end this suffering. L’Arche provides residential homes, work and therapeutic day programs, and networks of friendship and support for people with intellectual disabilities. L’Arche is present in 19 U.S. cities and 39 countries worldwide. Investing in the Lives of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities: L’Arche in the United States requires private growth capital to significantly expand its capacity to serve people with intellectual disabilities. • Close to 317,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are on waiting lists for home and community-based services in the United States. • L’Arche receives multiple calls each week from people across the U.S. asking how they can bring L’Arche homes and programs to their local area. • The impact of L’Arche goes beyond its commitment to people with disabilities. The L’Arche model is impacting the way that both secular and faith-based organizations think about how they deliver their services within the medical system, for at-risk youth, the homeless, and for America’s growing population of senior citizens. No matter what our status, everyone wants to be seen and treated as a person and be surrounded by love and friendship. L’Arche is a model of how to do this. • L’Arche USA has a five-year strategic plan from 2021-26 focused on building existing service capacity in 20 cities, and establishing sites in several new cities across the country.
