Building Changes believes everyone is Washington can be stably housed. We strengthen the leaders, organizations and systems that make it possible. Our reach is statewide.

About This Cause

Building Changes occupies a unique space in the fight against homelessness. We test various strategies to determine which ones work best in meeting the needs of people experiencing homelessness. We accomplish this through collaboration with governments, philanthropies, and nonprofits across a variety of different sectors. We pull together their talents and pool together their resources into a collective and tactical effort to solve homelessness. Our ultimate goal is to advance the most effective, equitable, and cost-efficient solutions for fighting homelessness, and then spread those solutions across the entire state. Data and research inform the solutions to homelessness that we endorse. We gain a tremendous amount of knowledge by assisting governments and nonprofits in the design, development, and implementation of innovative programs. We evaluate those programs, using both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and then share our findings with the field to expand the reach of best practices. We examine both the pathways that lead families and young people into homelessness, as well as the lanes that lead them out. The more we know about the characteristics of homelessness in our state, the better our chances to solve the homeless crisis. We continuously are refining solutions to homelessness to ensure that they remain current, relevant, and effective. We tailor solutions to meet the needs of different populations. For example, what works best in an urban county may not be feasible in a rural one, so we help smaller communities design solutions that are the right fit for them. To address racial disproportionality and disparities in homelessness, we urge communities to take specific actions to ensure their services are accessible and equitable to all – and then support them in their efforts. Our Schoolhouse Washington project is considered a national model in addressing the challenges of students experiencing homelessness.
